Chuck is remembered for his great compassion and selfless nature. These qualities are the catalyst for his life's legacy. He has been credited with returning hope and purpose to many veterans through Healing at English River Outfitters (HERO), which he helped establish in 2008. It was developed with the intention of offering a relaxing outdoor experience for veterans and their families, especially accommodating those with disabilities. The property has been developed over the years to include multiple buildings, extensive trails and facilities for hunting, fishing, camping and hiking. Just last month, part of Chuck's original vision was accomplished when HERO broke ground for a new lodge which will be large enough to host programs, community events, and veteran retreats. He was a proud brother of the Vietnam Vets Motorcycle Club. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Burlington. He was a Canteen Board member of the Muscatine V.F.W., The State Sergeant of Arms of Iowa as well as a past Post Commander. Those left to honor his memory include his wife Janet and children: Tyson (Carie) Geertz of North Carolina, Nicole (Kyle) Miller of Burleson, Texas, Morgan and Katie of Muscatine; his parents Charles and Carolyn Geertz of Keithsburg; two brothers Carl (Melanie) Geertz of New Boston, Illinois, and Cyle (Lee) Geertz of Nichols; one sister, Crystal 'Jojo' (Bill) Millage of Keithsburg, Illinois, and brother-in-law, Darrell Fisher of Keithsburg. He has five grandchildren: Daniel (Maddie), Laura, Rebecca, McKenna, and Britley. There are also many nieces, nephews, foster siblings, and treasured friends who will miss him greatly. He was preceded in death by his sister, Cindy Fisher; an adopted sister, Linda Marie Johnson; and nephew Cody Geertz. Visitation will be from 2 until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 28, 2019, at the Iowa National Guard Armory, 5901 US Highway 61, Muscatine. A Celebration of Life will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 31, 2019 at the Iowa National Guard Armory in Muscatine. Military honors will be provided by the Honor Guard of Muscatine County, Inc. A time of food and fellowship will follow the celebration from 2 until 8 p.m. The Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home is entrusted with all arrangements. Online Condolences: www.wittichfuneralhome.com As an expression of sympathy, memorials may be made to HERO by visiting http://englishriveroutfitters.org/ The family hopes to complete the lodge in Chuck's honor using memorial gifts.
