Jerry Winter, long time resident of Rake, IA, passed away Sunday, June 23 surrounded by his wife Marlene and four children. Jerry was born on October 9, 1938 in Rake, Iowa to Bud (John) and Marian Winter. He was married to Marlene Murphy, his wife of 61 years at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Guckeen, Minnesota. Jerry and Marlene lived in Rake, where they raised four children; Lori (Bruce) Van Gerpen of Rake, Teresa (Kevin) Griffith of Lehigh, Kent (Neda) Winter of Calabasas, CA and Nikki (Jed) Hunsader of Belle Plaine, MN. Jerry was well known in the area and was forever grateful and awed by the over 600 get-well cards he received after a massive heart attack in 2003. For many years, Jerry was known for his high school sports, especially basketball in which he helped lead Rake High School's (1954-55) team, then Iowa's fourth smallest school to a sub-state clash with Iowa's fourth largest school from Marshalltown. In later years, Jerry played fast pitch softball and refereed basketball. rry was on the courses of Elmore and Buffalo Center, where he was easily spotted with his pipe either in his mouth or resting beside his ball. In his later, years Jerry was always the first one ready as he eagerly joined Marlene and family for Mass. In later years, he enjoyed visiting granddaughters Anna and Leah in Germany and California and locally watching grandchildren Chris, Jessica, and Allison compete in sports at North Iowa High School or Andrew and Benjamin in Belle Plaine, Minnesota. He was their biggest fan. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, (Howard and Irene Murphy) and his beloved grandson Terry. He is survived by his wife Marlene, his four children, his brothers Mark (Carol) Winter, Don (Joan) Winter, his sister Cheri (Jerry) Kester, seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
