How Did We Do?

Marianne Nixon Powers born August 12, 1953 passed from this life on November 15th, 2018.She was welcomed home in heaven by her Lord and Savior, her body a tragedy but her soul scrubbed clean. Marianne was born and raised in Burien, Washington. She moved to San Antonio for a short time when she was very young. In her married life she lived in Renton, Des Moines, Federal Way, and most recently on The Redmond Ridge in Trilogy. Congratulations Sweetheart on a job well done.

The world is now a little less pleasant place without her in it. Marianne was the sweetest person you'd ever want to meet. She loved everyone and everyone loved her. She was a most amazing mother to her 2 girls, Lisa and Katie. She would do anything for her girls. That love and devotion was passed on to her 4 grand children, Jadelyn, Nathan, Andrew and Evan. She was at her happiest when she was cuddling each of them. Marianne graduated from Highline High school in Burien as well as Highline Community College. Her first fulltime job was with Seafirst Bank up until she had her first child.

Marianne was married to her husband Greg for almost 45 years. It was a marriage made in heaven. Despite their young ages and her many health obstacles when they began their life journey, they made their marriage work. It was a love for the ages. They were inseparable and best friends for all 45 years of their marriage. Their marriage was a shining example of what love and commitment is all about.

It was Marianne who convinced Greg to buy an RV when he retired. It was the start of a lifestyle that they enjoyed for many years. Heaven for Marianne was a good book and a bag of sunflower seeds in a comfy chair at the beach. Her love for reading led her to her job at the Woodmont Elementary School library. It was a job she enjoyed for 25 years. She encouraged a love for reading in many children there by making the school library a friendly, fun, place with lots of adventure to be found. She was adored by many of her students who discovered what a special person she really was. Marianne was also a PTA volunteer, often taking on roles that weren't in her comfort zone because the job needed to be done. It was that sense of duty that earned her a Golden Acorn award which she treasured.

In her later years, she volunteered at her parish, provided care for her parents, and babysat her grandkids until cancer and quadriplegia robbed her of the ability to help others. Always a fighter, Marianne fought her health issues with fierceness and survived for over 2 years with her disability. Despite losing her mobility, despite being in debilitating pain daily, despite suffering the indignities of quadriplegia, she awoke every morning with a smile on her face and her pretty blue eyes sparkling. She never complained or felt sorry for herself. She kept asking, "What am I supposed to learn from this?" As was her style, she was teaching us. She was teaching us to stand up to adversity. She was teaching us to not let your situation dictate your attitude. She was teaching us that love will conquer all. She was teaching us grace and dignity through her amazing example. All her family asks is that if you find yourself, getting angry at someone, or losing your cool, take a moment and reflect upon how Marianne would have reacted in that situation. Her non judgmental forgiveness worked every time. It was her gift to us.

Mrs. Powers was an amazing librarian. I was privileged enough to know her during my time at Woodmont, and for that I will be forever thankful. She helped make life better for some many people around her, students and peers alike. I wish I had more time with you.

My mom and Marianne were good walking buddies in Trilogy and we have missed her sunny presence - I remember her when she dropped home one day to check on my mom and I was touched by her grace and compassion. Our hearts and thoughts go out to her children and grandchildren that she spoke of so lovingly and her devoted husband, Greg.

I am so honored to have known and worked with Marianne for many years at Woodmont. She truly was an angel on this earth. I cannot think of a sweeter, kinder person. Both of my daughters loved Marianne when they attended Woodmont and later, Jaclyn also had the privilege of working with her. Marianne's sweet nature, warm smile, and gentle soul was an inspiration and example for all who knew and loved her. She will be dearly missed.
