Reverend James J. Whelan, Retired, died on Tuesday, June 26, 2018. Father Whelan was born on March 15, 1947, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late John M. Whelan and the late Catherine (Clarke) Whelan. Father Whelan attended Saint Francis De Sales and Resurrection Parochial Schools, Philadelphia, and Father Judge High School, Philadelphia, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary. Father Whelan was ordained on May 19, 1973, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by His Eminence, John Cardinal Krol. Father Whelan served as Parochial Vicar at Ss. Philip and James Parish, Exton; Holy Saviour Parish, Norristown; Saint Anthony of Padua Parish, Ambler; Saint Matthew Parish, Philadelphia; Sacred Heart Parish Havertown; and Ss. Peter and Paul Parish, West Chester. He also served as Parochial Administrator and Pastor, Saint Kevin Parish, Springfield. He retired from active ministry in March 2014. Gainer and Reverend Monsignor Daniel J. Kutys will be the Homilist. Father Whelan is survived by his brother John M. Whelan (Kathleen) and his sister Margaret M. Whelan. Father Whelan was preceded in death by his brother Martin J. Whelan. He is also survived by his Sister-in-Law Mary Ann Whelan and Nieces and Nephews. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Bensalem. In lieu of flowers donations to the Church of St. Kevin 200 Sproul Rd. Springfield, Pa 19064 or the Mission Helpers of the Sacred Heart 1001 W.
