Dorothy Jean Hatfield, one of seven children of Vera Pearl (Graul) and James Gerald Thomas, was born on August 31, 1924 in Lincoln, Nebraska. She grew up on a farm near the Wales, Iowa area and graduated from Wales Lincoln High School in 1932.
Dorothy and Everett Percy Hatfield, son of Leah Pearl (Campbell) and Ray Arthur Hatfield, were married on March 11, 1946 in Hiawatha, Kansas. They made their home in Malvern, Iowa and their marriage was blessed with four children, Linda Diane, Bonnie Jean, Larry Dean, and James Ray.
Dorothy kept busy as a homemaker and mother, was an excellent cook, and was known for her fabulous homemade noodles. She loved to decorate cakes which were shared at many family birthday celebrations. Dorothy loved quilting and sewing and made quilts for all her children, grandkids, and great grandchildren. Among her other enjoyments were reading, playing cards with the "39" club, attending Red Hat Society events, and going to area craft shows with her daughters. Dorothy was a wonderful mother and grandmother. Her family was her pride and joy.
Dorothy and Everett were married 46 years when Everett passed away on August 30, 1992. Dorothy continued to make her home in Malvern. Eventually she moved to the Malvern Village, and in April 2012, moved to the Risen Son Christian Village in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Dorothy passed away at Risen Son on February 13, 2013, at the age of 88 years, 5 months, and 12 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Everett; son Larry Hatfield; brothers, Max Thomas, Dale Thomas and wife Dorothy Mae, James Thomas, and Eugene Thomas; sisters-in-law, Leah "Leota' Sutton and husband Delbert, Erma Walston and husband Melvin, and Kathryn Hatten and husband Robert; brothers-in-law, Leland Lewis, Dallas "Art" Hatfield and wife Thelma, and Thomas "Harold" Hatfield.
Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Linda Stortenbecker and husband Leo of Silver City, IA, and Bonnie Hatfield of Malvern; son Jimmy Hatfield of Malvern; grandchildren, Brian Stortenbecker and wife Kelly of Silver City, Derrick Hatfield of Norwalk, IA, Jami Bammer and husband Matt of Aurora, CO, and Angela Slaughter and husband Chris of Glenwood, IA; great grandsons, Drayton, A.J., and Jacob Slaughter; great granddaughter Kendall Stortenbecker; sisters, Lola Lewis of Katy, TX, and Ruth Ann Divis and husband Kenneth of Omaha, NE; sister-in-law Frances Hatfield of Milford, IA; nieces, nephews and many cousins; and a host of friends.
Memorials suggested to the Malvern Volunteer Fire Department or Malvern Volunteer Rescue.
