Marie Virginia Schoening, one of four children of Arthur William "Art" Hafer and Neva May (Moseley) Hafer, was born at Council Bluffs, Iowa on March 8, 1918. When Marie was in the fourth grade, the family moved to Silver City, Iowa where she graduated from high school in 1936. They were members of the Silver City Baptist Church where Marie was baptized and attended Sunday School.
Marie and Byron Edward "Bud" Schoening were married on September 8, 1938 at Rock Port, Missouri and established their first home in Silver City. In 1939 Bud and Marie moved to Canoga Park, California were he worked for Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. After the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, Marie became a member of the Volunteer Women's Ambulance Defense Corps and also worked at Lockheed.
Following the war, they returned to Silver City. In September 1947, a daughter Linda was born and in April 1949, a son James was born. Marie was active in the community serving as a Den Mother for the Cub Scout Pack. She was a member of the Baptist Church Kensington and the Silver City Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.
On July 20, 1961, Marie began a 21 year career at the Glenwood State Hospital School where she advanced and retired as a Child Development Worker-II on April 27, 1983. She and Bud continued to live in Silver City and participate in community events. In June of 2005, Bud and Marie moved in with Linda and Owen and later to the Montclair Nursing Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Marie's greatest enjoyment came with time spent with her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her other enjoyments included pets of any kind, watching birds in her yard, and the American Legion Auxiliary where she served as secretary for many years.
Marie and Bud had been married 67½ years when Bud passed away on March 27, 2006 at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa at the age of 88 years. Marie returned to their Silver City home on April 13, 2006 where she was cared for Jim and Rose. Her health declined and Marie died at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs on May 8, 2007 at the age of 89 years and 2 months. In addition to her husband, Marie was preceded in death by her parents.
Marie is survived by her daughter Linda Jens and husband Owen of rural Glenwood, IA; son James Schoening and wife Rose of Silver City; brother Jim Hafer of Silver City; sisters Grace Feyerabend and husband William of Ames, IA and Florence Houser and husband Don of Glenwood; four grandchildren and four step-grandchildren, Lisa Leu, Jason Dalton, Robert Schoening and Todd Schoening, Denise Malcom, Rod, Mike and Michelle Siebert; eight great grandchildren and eight step-great grandchildren.
