Katie Frederiche Marie Hamann, one of three children of Detlef and Lena Louise (Kruse) Fischer, was born April 7, 1905 on her parent's Sugar Maple Farm in Mills County, Iowa. Katie was baptized at her home on August 22, 1906. In 1920, at the age of 15, she was confirmed and became a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Mineola, Iowa. Katie attended Center Country School and graduated from the eighth grade. Following school, Katie continued to live at home and work with her family on the farm.
Katie and Irvin Henry Harry Hamann were married on September 16, 1931 and made their home on the Sugar Maple Farm. Katie and Irvin continued to farm and were active members of the St. John Lutheran Church in Mineola. In addition to her many duties on the farm, Katie loved working with her flowers, and feeding and watching the birds in her yard. Katie took an interest in the area's history and was a life member of the Mills County Historical Society. Katie and Irvin had been married nearly 50 years at the time of Irvin's death on June 19, 1981. Katie continued to live on the Sugar Maple Farm until 1993, when after nearly 88 years on the farm, she moved to the Peace Haven Home in Walnut, Iowa. In January of 2003, Katie moved to the Allen House Assisted Living Center in Atlantic, Iowa, where she quickly became one of the favorites among the residents and staff. Katie died at the Allen House on July 29, 2005 at the age of 100 years, 3 months, and 22 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters Mary Hamann and Sophia Roenfeld; and nephew Marvin Roenfeld.
Katie is survived by her nephews, Harry Roenfeld and his wife Helen of Elk Horn, IA, Wilbert Roenfeld and his wife Angela of Harlan, IA, and Robert Roenfeld and his wife Karen of Bella Vista, AR; nieces Evelyn Jensen and her husband Reuben of Alexandria, MN, Sharon Clausen and her husband Terry of Treynor, IA, Charlotte Smith and her husband Smitty of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Marcia Mathews of Treynor, IA; niece-in-law Erma Lee Roenfeld of Blue Earth, MN; other relatives and friends.
