Elva Mildred Hoover, one of six children of William Arterburn and Leola May (Canedy) Arterburn, was born November 11, 1908 at her family's farm home north of Emerson, Iowa. Elva started school at Sandiland rural school. She attended various other schools, graduating from Malvern High School in 1925. Following high school, she attended Cedar Falls and Peru State Teacher's college where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. Elva began her teaching career in area country schools. She loved her profession and taught for over 40 years in Silver City.
Elva and Cecil Emerson Hoover of Malvern, Iowa were married June 22, 1940 in Des Moines, Iowa. They made their home at 110 East 5th Street in Malvern and their marriage was blessed with one daughter, Linda Kay. Cecil entered the Army in 1942. Following his discharge from the service, they resided in Wood River, Nebraska where Cecil was employed at the Quaker Oats Bomber Plant. They returned to Malvern at war's end.
Failing health forced Cecil's early retirement in the late 1950's. Elva returned to teaching at Silver City and later at East Elementary School in Glenwood, Iowa. She retired in 1973. Elva and Cecil had been married 38 years at the time of Cecil's death on April 13, 1979. Elva continued to live in their home. She was a good cook, enjoyed her craftwork, and caring for her vegetable and flowers gardens. Elva was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Malvern Garden Club, the Malvern United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.
Following a stroke in 1997, Elva moved to the Glen Haven Home in Glenwood, Iowa. Later in 1998, Ronald and Linda moved into Elva's home in Malvern to care for her.
Elva died at her home on July 26, 2005 at the age of 96 years, 8 months, and 15 days. She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Lorrene Arterburn; her parents; her husband Cecil Hoover; brothers John Arterburn, Ollie Arterburn, and Elwin Arterburn and sister Ila Boles.
Elva is survived by her daughter, Linda Perkins and her husband Ronald of Malvern, IA; grandsons Barry Perkins and his wife Verlee of Panora, IA and Darcy Perkins and companion Jane Quick of Avoca, Nebraska; six great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson.
