Crystal Emma Hites, one of three children of William D. and Goldie L. (Chabot) Resh, was born September 17, 1916 in Climax, Iowa. Crystal became a member of the Methodist Church at an early age. She attended school in Hastings, Iowa where she graduated from the Hastings High School in 1934. She furthered her education at the Iowa Methodist School of Nursing in Des Moines, Iowa and became a registered nurse in 1938.
On September 28, 1940, Crystal and Ralph Hites were united in marriage in Red Oak, IA. Their union was blessed with two sons, Ralph William and Jerry Lynn. Crystal worked as a nurse for the Mills County Home and later for Dr. Melvin Scheffel in Malvern, Iowa. Crystal's nursing career brought both pleasure and fulfillment to her life. She and Ralph enjoyed following the boys' school and sports activities, and Crystal also enjoyed crocheting and gardening. Crystal was a member of the Malvern United Methodist Church and the Iowa Nurses' Association. Ralph and Crystal enjoyed 55 years together prior to Ralph's death on November 12, 1995. Crystal continued to live in her Malvern home until moving to the Risen Son Christian Village in Council Bluffs, Iowa on March 31, 2003. She endured a mild stroke July 18th and passed away August 1, 2003 at the Risen Son.
Crystal was preceded in death by her brother George Resh and sister Edith Woods. Crystal is survived by her two sons, Ralph (Bill) Hites and his wife Christine of Corinth, Texas and Jerry Hites and his wife Janet of Spokane, Washington; four grandchildren, Harriett, Kathy, Jeffrey, and Susan; two great grandchildren, Brittney and Halley; brother-in-law Ray Hites of Hastings, Iowa and sister-in-law Gladys Tudor of Omaha, Nebraska; nieces, nephews, cousins, and caring friends.
