Barbara Nielsen

Barbara Ann Nielsen the daughter of Louis Edward O'Brien and Julia Jean Rose O'Brien, was born at Shenandoah, Iowa on December 1, 1947. She entered into rest on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at the age of 60 years, 11 months and 18 days. Barbara attended St. Patrick's Parochial School in Imogene, Iowa until the eighth grade, after which she attended Shenandoah High School graduating with the Class of 1965. After graduation she attended and graduated from Stewart Beauty School in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
On May 13, 1967, she was united in marriage to Larry Nielsen at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Imogene, Iowa. To this union one son Troy, was born. After their marriage they lived in Walnut, Iowa, later moving to the towns of Shenandoah and Clarinda making their home for many years in rural Imogene, Iowa. Barbara moved to Shenandoah in 2006.
Throughout her lifetime she had been employed at Henry Fields Nursery Company, later working for many years as an operator for Northwestern Bell in Shenandoah; in later years she was employed at Central Surveys in Shenandoah.
Barbara was a long time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, and photography.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Larry on April 8, 1990. Survivors include her son Troy Nielsen and wife Kelly of rural Imogene, Iowa; grandchildren, Drew Nielsen and Sydney Nielsen of rural Imogene, Iowa; her parents Louis and Jean O'Brien of Shenandoah, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Vern Smith celebrating the mass. Attending to the memorial register were Faustina McGinnis and Marcella Ryan, while Don Gibson and Dr. Pat Emge served as ushers. Assisting with the mass were Mary Beth Gowing as organist, Jane Emge as song leader, and Blaine Maher as lector. Casket Bearers for the service included Jeff Miller, Mark Feller, Donnie Doyle, Jr., Don Delehant, Rick Lambertsen and Drew Nielsen. Burial followed at Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
