In loving memory of

Margrit Barber
October 18, 2011

On July 25, 2009 our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend passed into the arms of the Lord. Margrit was born September 5, 1945 in Oldenburg, Germany to Magnus and Margarete Sander. Margrit was an only child and moved with her family to Chicago at the age of five where she learned English for the first time. In her teens her family moved to Oshkosh, WI. There she graduated from Oshkosh West High School in 1963, and later, from Wisconsin State University-Oshkosh in 1967 with a degree in German and secondary education. She later earned her Masters Degree in education from Marion College in 1999. While in Oshkosh she met the man of her dreams, Roger Barber, and they were married on June 24, 1967. They were blessed with the gift of two children, Kristine and Nancy. In 1975 she moved to Green Bay where she got her first teaching job as an aide at Tank Elementary School. She later taught German at Premontre High School followed by 30 plus years teaching English at Seymour High School.

Of the many accomplishments Margrit has had in her life, she was most proud of her 42 years of marriage to Roger, her children and her grandchildren. Grandma was always there to give hugs and loved to teach her children and grandchildren about their German heritage.

Teaching was so important to Margrit. Margrit has changed the lives of many students throughout the years. She continued to teach even after retirement by being involved with the Learning in Retirement Program at UW-GB where she taught German classes. She also was involved in the Green Bay Literacy program where she taught English to her prized student, Yuko. She was always inspired by her students and they enriched her life, just as she enriched theirs.

Margrits other passions in life were gardening, golf, traveling and reading. She enjoyed her book club with her Seymour friends, and took great pride in her many flower beds. Margrit was a member of St. John Luthern Church where she was instrumental in starting a memorial garden, was involved with the Helping Hands quilting group, and Summer Bible camp.

Margrit has touched many lives. She will be missed greatly.
Survivors include her husband Roger, Green Bay; her daughters Kristine (Tyson) Kamikawa, Massachusetts; and Nancy (Ross) Gaedtke, Green Bay, her grandchildren Kaden Gaedtke, Isabelle, Lilly and Isaac Kamikawa; her cousins Heike Luttmann, Gerd Jugert, Hillie Meyer, Germany; mother in law, Evelyn Barber, Oshkosh; sister-in-laws Beverly (Jerry) Smerling, Janice (Glenn) Heugel, many nieces and nephews.

Margrit was preceded in death by her parents; Magnus and Margarete Sander, father in law John Barber; and German relatives.
Margrit would like to thank all of the doctors and nurses at St. Vincents Hospital and Unity Hospice for helping her through her 2 year fight against ovarian cancer. She cherished all the extra time given to her to spend with her family. She would also like to thank all of her loyal and dear friends from St. Johns church, Seymour High School and all of her other close friends for all of their support, prayers and comfort that were given over the past years. Thank you!
