"When I joined SASIB/GRS/Alstom in 1996, Rick was one of the first persons I worked with. He was the Staff Engineer at the time, in other words, the in-house Application Engineering guru. He was like a mentor for many of us less experienced engineers, offering technical advice and general counsel with company-related matters. His office door was always open, even though he was a very busy man as his position in the Company made him the go-to guy, including whenever a railway/transit customer anywhere in the world was experiencing system technical difficulties that they could not solve and in which only an on-site/hands-on appearance by Rick could resolve. While he was well known for his superior technical knowledge and experience, he was even better known for his character and personality. Rick always had a positive can-do attitude and if there was any tension in meetings, either in-house or with customers, he was always the calmest guy in the room and had the knack for putting everyone else at ease with his philosophical approach, his experience and his wisdom. People always left the room in a better mood than when they arrived because of Rick?s attitude and demeanor. I just watched the family tribute video. Obviously, as much as he was valued and respected in his professional life, more importantly, he was a loving, devoted family man. And yes, he was a very good golfer whether he admits to it or not! Hilton: Passed away on September 19, 2024. Rick is predeceased by his parents, Ronald & Gerry Scheffer. He is survived by his loving wife & best friend, Jo Ann Scheffer; sons, Matt (Kathy) Scheffer & Ben (Liz) Scheffer; grandchildren, Hannah, Brenden, Christian; siblings, Sue (Michael) Murphy, Dan (Michele) Scheffer, Bonnie (Frank) Martin, Debbie Scheffer, Dave (Mary) Scheffer, Mark Scheffer & Terry Scheffer; brothers-in-law & sisters-in-law, Jan (Harvey) Collen, Clark (Diane) Tuttle, Paul Tuttle & Jerri (Vance) McMichael; many nieces, nephews & cousins.
Rick worked for General Railway Signal for 45 years. He was a devoted Catholic and active with Worldwide Marriage Encounter. His family was most important, his grandchildren were his shining light. He loved the game of golf and sometimes it loved him as well.
Rick's life story will be shared during visitation, 3:00-6:00 pm on Friday, September 27th at the funeral home, 1411 Vintage Lane. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 on Saturday, September 28th at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 3747 Brick Schoolhouse Rd. Hamlin, NY 14464. Memorial donations can be made in Rick's name to St Elizabeth Ann Seton Church or Mt. Carmel House, 288 Frisbee Hill Rd, Hilton, NY 14468.
