In loving memory of

Mary Jo (Sum) Vonderschmitt
August 7, 1930 - March 27, 2024

Mary Jo (Sum) Vonderschmitt, 93, passed away peacefully at her Washington residence the afternoon of March 27, 2024. She was born in Washington on August 7, 1930, to Joseph M. and Madeline (Fougerousse) Sum. Mary Jo was a June bride in 1956 when she married the love of her life, John W. "Bill" Vonderschmitt. Together, they created a loving home for themselves and their growing family until Bill's passing in 2014.

Mary Jo worked at the First Federal Savings Bank as a customer solutions representative. She was a fifty-year volunteer member of the Daviess Community Hospital Axillary. She was an avid bird watcher and enjoyed the game of Bridge.
Most of all, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who treasured time with her family. Always steadfast in her faith, Mary Jo was a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church; although, in her heart, she was a lifelong member of St. Mary Church.

Those who now cherish Mary Jo's memory include her daughter, Carol (Richard) Oren of Grandville, Michigan; and her son, Mark (Deborah) Vonderschmitt of Louisville, Kentucky. Mary Jo was blessed with six grandchildren: Joseph Oren; Daniel (Trisha) Oren; Benjamin (Katrina) Vonderschmitt; Kendrick (Celeste) Vonderschmitt; Kaitlin (Tyler) Harris; and Timothy (Kayla) Vonderschmitt. She leaves five great-granchildren: Wesley; Ainsley; Adelaide; Hopper; and Eloise.

During her lifetime, Mary Jo mourned the loss of her parents, Joseph and Madeline Sum; her husband, Bill Vonderschmitt; sister, Elizabeth A. Sum; and brothers: Robert Sum, William Francis Sum and Eugene Sum.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Mary Jo's memory to the St. John Cemetery, in care of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, 315 NE 3rd Street, Washington, Indiana 47501.

Visitation for Mary Jo Vonderschmitt will be 5:00-7:00 pm, Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at the Ed L. Lee Mortuary, 620 East Viola Avenue, Washington, Indiana.
