In loving memory of

Mavis Marie Johnson
November 7, 1947 - February 24, 2023

Mavis Marie Johnson was born on November 7, 1947 in Denison, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Dorothy (Newcom) Krock. She grew up in the Deloit and Vail, Iowa area where she graduated from Ar-We-Va High School. Following high school, Mavis received her Licensed Practical Nursing Degree.

On May 10, 1975, Mavis was united in marriage to Alan Johnson in Vail at the United Presbyterian Church. To this union, they were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Wendy. They made their home in Deloit.

In 1981, Mavis attended Des Moines Area Community College where she received her Registered Nursing Degree. She was an R.N. at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison for 35 years. Following her retirement as an R.N., she continued to work part -time in the education department for the diabetic self-management program for 7 years and became a substitute school nurse for the Denison-Schleswig School system for another 12 years before retiring completely in 2019.

In addition to being a full-time nurse, Mavis was a lifelong member of the American Legion Auxiliary for many years, Deloit Units Treasurer for over 20 years, and Crawford County Treasurer for over 10 years. She was also a member of the AAUW, Christians Women's Clubs, and the United Presbyterian Church where she has been an Elder for several years.

Mavis enjoyed reading, socializing with all her friends, and traveling with her husband and daughter as much as possible. She never missed a vendor show with Wendy when she sold Pink Zebra nor did she ever miss Black Friday shopping, no matter the weather conditions. She was an avid gardener and loved tending to all her flower beds. All summer long, you could find Mavis planting flowers or pulling weeds. She loved all animals, especially her cats; growing up on a farm instilled that love and it only continued when she moved to town. Above all, Mavis had a strong faith who cherished her family more than anything.

Mavis passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Friday, February 24, 2023 at Gracewell-Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, attaining the age of 75 years. She was preceded in death by her parents: Walter and Dorothy Krock; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Marvin and Betty Johnson; and brother-in-law, Frances Johnson.

Mavis is survived by her husband, Alan Johnson of Deloit; daughter, Wendy and her husband Jeremy Brown of Carroll; in-laws: Mike (Deb) Johnson, Marlin (Candi) Johnson, and Karen (Kirby) Fields, several nieces, nephews, many good friends and extended family members.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 2, 2023 at the United Presbyterian Church in Vail with burial to follow in the King Cemetery also in Vail. We all met doing a vendor show together and we have been friends and have kept in touch over the years even though I am no longer a consultant. I will miss seeing Mavis a great deal when I go to visit Wendy at vendor shows. I always enjoyed my talks with Mavis. Such a precious, beautiful soul! She will be terribly missed. "As a fellow nurse I learned so much from Mavis! - She was excellent at her job and had a real knack at teaching others in her kind soft spoken way! She also subbed for me at the Denison Schools as the School Nurse where she also excelled. Fly High Mavis - I am proud to have called you my friend! Linda Spiegel"
