In loving memory of

LAILA J. MAZE
April 29, 1926 - January 22, 2023

Laila J. Maze, 96, of Republic, passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2023. She was surrounded by her loving daughters and under the care of Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice and the staff of Teal Lake Assisted Living.

She was born in Humboldt, MI, a daughter of the late Victor and Maria (Plukka) Mustamaa and had resided in the area for most of her life.

Laila was a "Rosie the Riveter" working as a machine operator for Briggs Manufacturing in Detroit during WWII. She then earned her high school diploma at Hazel Park High School in Hazel Park, MI.

She worked as a long distance telephone operator for Michigan Bell where she received awards for her excellent service to the servicemen and women during a time of war. She also worked as a sales clerk at Montgomery Wards in Warren, MI, JL Hudsons in Troy, MI where she earned recognition for her service and Hagelstein Bakery in Royal Oak, MI.

Laila was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic. She was an excellent seamstress, she also enjoyed crocheting, crafts, taking road trips and fine dining. Her family will remember her as someone who was always willing to help anyone in need if she was able to without hesitation.

She is survived by her children, Dana (Sharon) Maze of Sterling Heights, MI, Rhonda (Thomas) Casselman of Negaunee, Laura Maze of Republic and Don Maze of Marquette; 5 grandchildren, Danny (Lisa) Maze, Wendy (Dan) McAllister, Andrew Henderson, Jr, Troy (Sarah) Henderson and Kara Stahl; 10 great-grandchildren; and friend, Irene Harvala of Marquette. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lawrence Maze; siblings, Aileen Aho, Laurie, Eino, Elmer, John (Victor), Carl, Arnold and George; and step-sisters & brothers.

A celebration of Laila's life will be held in the spring/summer and will be announced.
