Mildred J McAfee-Smith, 88, of Des Moines, Iowa passed away on Friday, November 18, 2022, at Azria Health Park Place in Des Mones, Iowa. Graveside services will be on Friday, November 25, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Highland Memory Garden's Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa.
Mildred was born on July 18, 1934, in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma to William and Verda (Branham) Terrill. She grew up in Oklahoma and graduated high school in 1952. Mildred began working at a diner in Tulsa when she met the love of her life William McAfee. The young couple was married on November 17, 1952, just 20 days after they met. In 1964, the family relocated to West Des Moines, Iowa as William had taken a job with the Des Moines Register. While raising her kids Mildred began babysitting others. She later went to work for the telephone company then the United State Postal Service, which she retired from in 1995. Mildred loved spending time with her family, reading, spending time with her funny named cats, and collecting various items.
She is survived by her 2 sons, daughter, 4 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 2 nieces.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, daughter, 3 sisters, and brother.
Celebrate Life Iowa has been entrusted with the care of Mildred and her family.

"My family lived across the street from the Mcaffees back in the 60s (moving away in the early 70s). I have such fond memories of Mickey and her huge smile that radiated love. She was such a blessing to our family helping out when my youngest brother was born. Not sure what my parents would have done without her generous donation of her time. I?ve thought a lot of her over the years. One special gal I will never forget. Love to the family. "
