Eli Josias Perez, 21, passed away from injuries sustained in a car accident on Monday, July 25, 2022, in Mexico. Eli was born on July 5, 2001, to Ernesto Perez and Foricel Clark, in Panuco, Veracruz, Mexico. He graduated from Blackford High School in 2019. He then worked for Five Star, Pretzels Inc. in Bluffton, and most recently, Dollar General Distribution in Marion. When Eli moved to Grant County, he started attending Bethel Worship Center in Grant County, where he made many lifelong friendships. Recently, he had been attending First Presbyterian Church in Hartford City. In high school, Eli excelled in sports. He loved playing soccer, ran track, wrestled, and was also a cheerleader. He also was very active in the JROTC program. Eli loved people and was a true leader. He enjoyed going on mission trips and helping bring communities together. He led a children's group during Heritage Days. He also helped communities clean up after devastating storms ravaged their cities.
Eli is survived by his parents, Ernesto (Leyda Garcia) Perez and Floricel (DeWayne) Clark; sister, Julia Perez; half-sister, Keren Perez; grandmother, Eusebia Escobar; uncles, Rosendo Aguilar and Carlos Ortiz; aunt, Rocio Aguilar; and cousin, Sebastian Ortiz. He is also survived by numerous extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Rosendo Castillo.
Arrangements for Eli have been entrusted to the Jones-Smith Chapel of Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 259 North Main Street, Upland, Indiana, where a visitation will be held on Friday, August 5, from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 117 West Franklin Street, Hartford City, Indiana, on Saturday, August 6, at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor Troy Kaufman officiating. There will also be a time of visitation from 11:00 a.m. until the service begins.
