Lavon A. Lindhorst
November 14, 1921 - June 19, 2022

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2022 at the First Presbyterian Church, Algona, with Pastor Dave Skilling officiating. Burial will be held in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Lavon Alma (Sankey) Lindhorst was born on a farm in Sherman Township East of Galbraith, IA on November 14, 1921 to Bert and Clara (Warmbier) Sankey. She attended country school for 7 years and graduated from Algona High School in 1938. She worked as a bookkeeper at the Security State Bank in Algona until May 11, 1943 when she married Ralph W. Lindhorst at the First Presbyterian Church in Algona with Dr. C.C Richardson officiating. During WWII, she was a secretary at the POW Camp in Algona to the Provost Marshal. Being the wife of the Sheriff, they lived in the Sheriff's residence, and she cooked the meals for the prisoners.

Following Ralph's retirement as Sheriff, Lavon worked for the local newspaper as a typesetter. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Algona, Hospital Auxiliaries and a member of the garden club. She enjoyed cooking, canning, baking and gardening. She also enjoyed playing cards, fishing and traveling.

Lavon died Sunday, June 19, 2022, at Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona. She was 100 years old.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews; her foster daughter, Mary Ann Swanson and her husband Leroy of Sylacauga, AL; and their three children; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Lavon was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; parents, her older sister, Thelma Schmidt of Algona; younger sister, Doris Rasmussen of California; and younger brother, Bert Sankey of Britt.
