George Dale Mathis
February 13, 1939 - May 20, 2022

George Dale Mathis, 83, went to his heavenly home on May 20, 2022, surrounded by his family. He was born in Washington on February 13, 1939, to Charles "Chick" and Virginia (Ross) Mathis. On November 3, 1963, he married Marilyn Ann (Walls) Mathis; she preceded him in death.

George was a Washington High School graduate who went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Navy from 1958-1962 as a radio operator onboard ship. He later retired from Allison Transmission where he worked from 1965-1995. There, he built transmissions and was an inspector. He was a member of the Trinity Gospel Tabernacle in Washington.

A man of many interests, George enjoyed working on cars, computers, and going to auctions at Dinkey's. George was happiest when he was spending time with his family - especially his great-granddaughters, Kimberlin and Marilyn.

Those who now mourn George's passing include his children: James Mathis of Washington; Charles (Sue) Mathis of Indianapolis; Lisa (Randy) Stedman of Plainville; and Michael (Tracy) Mathis of Washington. George was blessed with seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Coming from a large family, George leaves several siblings: Bud Mathis; Frank Mathis; Mark Mathis; Fred Mathis; Esther Jones and Marilyn Street.

During his lifetime, George mourned the loss of his parents, Charles and Virginia Mathis; his wife, Marilyn Mathis; siblings: Bob Mathis; Tom Mathis; Elizabeth Jane Mathis; Ginny Orchard; Carolyn Sullivan; and Judith K. Wininger.

Visitation for George Dale Mathis will be 11:00 am -1:00 pm, Friday, May 27, 2022, at the Ed L. Lee Mortuary, North Chapel, 620 East Viola Avenue, Washington.

George's funeral services will immediately follow the visitation, beginning at 1:00 pm, also at the Ed L. Lee Mortuary, North Chapel. Pastor James Myers will officiate. Interment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery where George will be accorded military honors by the Washington American Legion and VFW.
