"Our sympathy to the Handlos families. We always enjoyed visiting with Lila when we stopped at Senior Living to see dad. She was always so nice and pleasant. Dad really enjoyed working on puzzles and playing cards with her."
Lila Johanna, daughter of Joseph and Celia (Muhlbauer) Riesselman, was born April 26, 1919 on the family farm near Halbur, Iowa. She attended St. Augustine's School in Halbur and helped her family on the farm. On February 1, 1939, Lila was united in marriage with Frank Handlos at St. Augustine's Church in Halbur. Three children were born to this union. Lila and Frank farmed until 1974 when they moved to Manning.
Through the years, Lila was an active member of Sacred Heart Church in Manning, including teaching CCD classes and quilting with the Piecemaker's Club. She volunteered at the Manning Senior Center and Manning Plaza nursing home, as well as the Manning Hospital Auxiliary and snack bar. Lila was an avid bowler, bowling in several leagues and tournaments over the years. Following Frank's death in 1990, Lila traveled extensively with her friends and with her children to Hawaii. She enjoyed many card clubs and created numerous crochet and quilt projects. Lila loved her family dearly and enjoyed babysitting for many of her grandchildren. She was fortunate to have spent her last six years receiving excellent care at Manning Senior Living, enjoying jigsaw puzzles and having good card games.
On Sunday, May 15, 2022, Lila passed away at Manning Senior Living in Manning, Iowa, attaining the age of 103.
Lila was preceded in death by her parents; husband Frank Handlos; two grandsons Quinn Handlos and Chris Handlos; step-grandson Eric Julius; great-great-granddaughter Madelyn Susanne Duflo; sister Sophia Sailer (Martin); and brother Joseph Riesselman (Catherine and Helen).
