John enjoyed gardening, carpentry, watching or playing soccer, especially Benfica, which is a professional football club based in Lisbon, Portugal.
He liked to play the guitar and the accordion, listen to The Beatles, Elvis, and Fados along with any Portuguese music... but most of all, he loved spending time with his family who meant the world to him. "John, my dear brother-in-law, whom I?ve known for many years and will always remember you until my last day on earth. Not a day goes by that I pause and ask myself, why did John have to go so soon? Donna and I have many great memories of you, especially for your caring ways. You were a proud family man who always put your family first, your work ethic was second to none and your love for life was immeasurable. I will miss coming to visit you and watch a soccer game together or when we called to congratulate each other on a Benfica or Sporting win. Even though I live ~80 miles from you, you and family always made it a point to visit. I will never forget the days when you were dating Bernardete and you came to my parent's home with your bell bottom pants and record player and played some of your favorite songs from Jose Roberto - Deixa o meu cabelo em pas, Eu nao presto mas te Amo ?. You were a great uncle to Sean, Daniel & Nicole and always treated them as if they were your own. How they loved watching soccer games and hanging with you at the house. You always made it so exciting. Thank you for sharing your love of European football with them - they will always love the game as much as you did. Rest in Peace and may God Bless your soul. Love you! Alberto, Donna and family. "

"John, Where do I begin . . . . You have been part of our family for over 50 years. You made my sister happy, Liz and Victor were a product of your love and your family continues to grow now with Mateo and Alayna. You always took great pride in family gatherings and in preparing foods that everyone loved; lulas grilhads, espetada, bacalhau, tuna escabeche and of course always offering an espresso to cap off the meal. Even though I was a kid, I remember when you left to go to Mozambique as a young soldier, being with Bernardete in Funchal as she waved goodbye to you. I think one of the songs she sang for the longest time after you left was "Olhitos Negros que eu deixei na minha terra". It was great to see the two of you reunite in 1974, and I had the great pleasure as a teenager to be able to attend your wedding. You brought so much joy with your passion for music. I will always remember your travels around the city of Rochester with some of our family and friends to Portuguese families homes on Christmas Eve to sing traditional Portuguese songs and keep a little bit of our culture alive. I could go on and on with the positive impact you had on so many people; but I will end with: . Gone to soon my brother . Gone but will not be forgotten . Rest in Peace ..... Descanca in paz!!
