Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, at the First Presbyterian Church in Manning with interment in the Manning Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday March 7, 2022, from 5 PM to 7 PM at the First Presbyterian Church in Manning and will resume after 9:30 AM on Tuesday at the church.
Phyllis Jean, daughter of Louie and Laura (Schroeder) Musfeldt, was born August 15, 1932, at the Manning Hospital in Manning, Iowa. After the death of her mother in 1934, Phyllis made her home with William and Edna Vollstedt. Phyllis attended school in Manning, graduating from Manning High School in 1950.
On September 7, 1952, Phyllis was united in marriage with William Opperman at the First Presbyterian Church. Five children were born to this marriage. Phyllis and Bill first lived in Ames where Bill finished his degree at Iowa State. Bill was then inducted into the U.S. Army and served at Fairchild AFB at Spokane, Washington until being honorably discharged in 1956. They then returned to Iowa and farmed north of Manning for the next 34 years. In 1992 they moved into Manning.
Throughout the years, Phyllis was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving on the session, with the Presbyterian Women and as Sunday School teacher. She was also active in the community serving as president of many organizations including: American Legion Auxiliary, County American Legion Auxiliary and P.E.O. Phyllis enjoyed sewing and was sewing chairman for the Presbyterian Women, and rehabilitation chairman for the American Legion Auxiliary. She along with her friends completed endless sewing that was sent to Africa, Haiti, VA hospitals, and nursing homes. Phyllis initiated and coordinated the church's prayer quilt ministry which quilted and distributed 210 prayer quilts.
On Wednesday, March 2, 2022, Phyllis passed away at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning, attaining the age of 89 years, 6 months and 15 days.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; a son-in-law Ronald Determan; a grandson Matthew Determan; and two brothers Merlin (Delone) Musfeldt and Louis Musfeldt Jr.
Phyllis is survived by her husband William Opperman of Manning; five children: Debra Determan of San Diego, California; Janis Opperman of Omaha, Nebraska; Robert Opperman and wife Kathleen of Rockford, Illinois; Beth Kastorff and husband Steven of Geneseo, Illinois; Paul Opperman and wife Paula Conners of Dubuque; six grandchildren: Brian Determan, Laura Scott, Andrea Joseph, Paul Kastorff, Justin Opperman and Megan Schafer; and seven great-grandchildren; Adelynn, Leighton, Willah, Justus, Evers, Haddon and Scarlett.
