James Lawrence Sprout was born December 11, 1931 in Cylinder, son of Ralph Herbert and Leone Mary (Lenz) Sprout. He attended school in Emmetsburg and graduated from Emmetsburg High School.
Jim met Rose Ann Platt at the Plantation Ballroom in Whittemore. The two were united in marriage on October 11, 1958 in Riverside, CA. They made their home in southern California where they lived for 32 years. While in California, Jim worked for Rohr Industries. He started as a painter and after eight years of employment he moved to inspections and inspected many aircrafts components.
Jim had a variety of interests. One of his favorites was the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, summer vacations and camping. He and Rose belonged to a camping club and stayed at several different campground sites around the country. It was not unheard of for them to travel, no matter the distance, just to have a good time camping. Music was a huge passion of Jim's that he joyously shared with others. In his younger years he taught himself to play the guitar; and used this skill as a member of the Country Goodtimers. When the group dissolved, he continued to share his love of music by playing and singing in the local nursing homes and being a member of the church choir.
Upon retirement, he and his family moved to Algona in the late 80's where he served as a 4th degree member of Knights of Columbus, Golden Kiwanias, and St. Cecelia Catholic Church. Jim was also a member of the barbershop clubs for many years.
Jim died Sunday, February 20, 2022 at Kossuth Regional Health Center, Algona. He was 90.
He is survived by his wife, Rose of Algona; sons, Larry Sprout of Madrid, Stephen Sprout of Algona; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Sprout of Washington State, Sister Mary Herman of Dubuque; brother-in-law, Michael Platt of Mankato, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are his parents; son, Robert; siblings, June Hall, Beverly O'Brien, Joyce Elmore, and John Sprout.
