It is with great sadness yet joy of a life well lived and the peace after a difficult fight, we announce Jean's passing from this earthly life. A life well lived under her own terms: July 10, 1958 -- February 17, 2022. Jean was 63 years of age.

Jean was born in Algona, Iowa, on July 10, 1958, the 5th daughter of and the 9th child of Robert and Kathleen Detrick's 17 children. She attended the local Catholic Schools for all 12 grades and graduated from Garrigan High School in 1976.

After high school Jean remained in Algona and worked for various local industries, restaurants, convenience stores, and retail stores before retiring in July 2020.

Jean very much enjoyed babysitting (especially her nieces and nephews), watching movies, taking short trips - mostly visiting relatives or in support of her nieces and nephews, being a caretaker for her mom and grandparents, and being a supportive influence to her family and her many friends in any capacity she was able, even if it was just a simple talk or discussion of, "what's bothering you?" or sitting with them--even as they lay dying.

You might say based on Jean's use of, she was a fan of Facebook...but maybe not so much a fan of those that didn't use their vehicle turn signal. You just had to follow her on Facebook to read of Jean telling it like it is. Her honesty will be an absence that will now be missed by her family and likely her many friends.

Upon Jean's death her sister, Linda, provided the following:
Remembering Jean, also known as "mean Jean". She was the middle child, which we were always reminded of from Jean. Jean had no children, but did have several children, "her nieces and nephews" they loved her and adored her...not just because you got to go to McDonald's, the pool or other special places...because she was there for each and everyone...Jean had a heart of gold!

Jean will be interred immediately next to Grandpa and Grandma Huber--two people she absolutely adored and cared; they were very much beneficial to each other and now will be for eternity.

Jean is survived by her siblings: Jackie Pedersen of West Liberty, Iowa; Joe Detrick of New Providence, Iowa; Dale Detrick (Gilberta) of Kansas City, Missouri; Beverly Kaiser (Wayne) of Algona, Iowa; Mary Anliker (Steve) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Linda Detrick of Emmetsburg, Iowa; Jim Detrick (Lori) of Ankeny, Iowa; Jon Detrick of Algona, Iowa; Charles Detrick of Algona, Iowa; Jeff Detrick (Jamie) of Ankeny, Iowa; Nick Detrick (Barb) of Algona, Iowa; Richard Detrick of Casper, Wyoming; Virginia Bubke of Spirit Lake, Iowa; Timothy Detrick (Michelle) of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and Robert "Chris" Detrick (Beth) of Casper, Wyoming. Jean is also survived by 13 nieces, 19 nephews, 18 great-nieces, 13 great-nephews, 1 great-great-niece, 2 great-great-nephews; an aunt, Bette Kern of Algona, Iowa; an uncle, Chuck Huber of Albuquerque, New Mexico; as well as several cousins and other extended relatives and close friends.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Steve; brother-in-law, John Pedersen; sister-n-law, Jane Detrick Wold; sister-in-law, Deborah Detrick; sister-in-law, Lori Detrick; niece, Melissa Detrick; nephew, Jackson Detrick; Grandpa and Grandma Detrick; and Grandpa and Grandma Huber.

"When Jean and I met we had in common the color of our hair. I knew right then we would be good friends. We got to know each other along with her many family members. We were talking one time and she had invited me to one of her family reunions. She said with my red hair I would fit right in. She was right for I had to explain on one or more occasions at the reunion which detrick I was...lol. We also had in common the fact we were members of the same club and helped each other to achieve sobriety. It wasn\'t easy but we helped each other along. My kids enjoyed the times she would stop and talk at my home. Gonna miss those conversations. R.I.P. my friend!?? "

"My deepest sympathy to the entire Detrick family. Though three years older than Jean, I remember Jean well, what a witty young girl growing up. All we St Cecelia and Garrigan families were \"one family in Christ\", and we 4-H families were close \"neighbors and friends\". May your sweet memories of Jean put a smile in your hearts as you think of some special & fun stories of her. I know when I the news, immediately she brought some cute stories into my memory bank. May she RIP, she earned her wings, and the promise our Lord has given his followers. JeanAnn Dodds Carrigan "
