In loving memory of

Marlys Anne Riessen
February 13, 1936 - January 19, 2022

Marlys Anne Riessen was born February 13, 1936 to the late Karl and Ruth (Paulson) Mummert in Aurelia, Iowa where she was raised on the family farm. She was involved in 4-H, played the piano, and took care of people in her community when they were sick with scarlet fever, cancer or wherever she was needed. She graduated Aurelia High School with the class of 1953.

After graduation, she attended the Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa where she attained her registered nursing degree in 1956. She was employed at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital as an obstetrics nurse and was promoted to supervisor until her retirement in 1986. During her career, she helped deliver generations of babies in Crawford County. She was highly loved and respected by hospital staff, patients and their families. She went above and beyond the call of duty.

On April 21, 1957, Marlys was united in marriage to Arlo Riessen at United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. To this union, they were blessed with two children: Lisa and Michael. They made their home in Denison. Over the years, Marlys always lent a hand in helping Arlo with farm work and livestock.

In earlier years, Marlys and Arlo enjoyed traveling, camping and hunting; including a six-week trip to Alaska and a trip to Ireland. They loved to go dancing, playing cards, bingo and music. Also, they would snowbird every winter to Vegas and then Arizona where they lived full time for many years. Marlys was an avid reader who enjoyed watching football and gardening, especially tending to her Hosta's. She loved life and had such a kind heart. Above all, she cherished her family more than anything.

Marlys passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at Brighton Gardens in Omaha, Nebraska attaining the age of eight-five years, eleven months and six days. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Dan Mummert and Arlo Mummert.

"Marlys was head of OB in 1978 when our son, Elliott, was born. That particular day all the labor rooms were occupied and there was a lineup to get into delivery. She assigned me to a fresh-out-of-nurses-training gal. "Keep an eye on her," Marlys told the newbie, "third-timers can go anytime." After the nurse did an exam she walked up to Marlys and shrugged. "I don't see anything." I'll never forget Marlys snapping on a fresh glove and saying, "Honey, sometimes completely ready to go looks like nothing. Let's have a look!" Trust me, I felt that all the way up to my tonsils. She then marched over to a red wall phone and punched in a short number: "Dr. Tan Creti, this is Marlys, I've got Renee Miller in here and she's ready to go. No, you don't have time to go to the Dairy Queen!" One of a kind she was. Our sympathy and prayers to Lisa, Gary and Sam. Renee and Butch Miller"
