Loretta Mae Jackson, age 86, of Quincy, died Sunday, January 9, 2022, at 6:10 am in Blessing Hospital.
She was born June 15, 1935 in Quincy, Illinois, the daughter of Francis "Frank" Jones and Alice Perkins Jones. She married Monzel Jackson on April 13, 1952 at Bethel A.M.E. Church. He preceded her in death on July 21, 2019.
Loretta's first job was with Motorola where she worked the assembly line wiring televisions and radios. In order to work there you were required to pass a test and, though she'd never worked before, she passed the test no problem and was hired on the spot. She remained with Motorola for over 8 years until the plant closed. Later, she joined the staff at Adams School as a cook in the cafeteria. By all accounts, she transformed the kitchen, bringing in her home recipes and adapting them in order to feed and nourish the students, faculty, and staff. She was also an avid bowler and dart player earning tournament trophies throughout her life.
A long-time member of Bethel A.M.E Church, Loretta was a woman of deep, abiding faith. She was strong, independent, and loved her family dearly. She was a powerful storyteller with a great sense of humor and was constantly laughing and joyful. Loretta poured love into everything she did. You could see that love in her smile as she opened the door to greet you, hear it in her voice on the other end of the phone, feel it in her care as she reached out to help you, and taste it in her food whenever she made a plate for you. Loretta, we sure enjoyed you.
Survivors include three children, Monzel (Natalie) Jackson, Jr. of Atlanta, GA, Peggy (Fred) Scott of Manhattan, KS, and Wesley (Charlyne) Jackson of Blue Springs, MO; six grandchildren, Geoffrey (Aaron) Scott, Shannon Scott, Kevin (Courtney) Scott, Austin Jackson, Carol Jackson, and Jonathan Jackson; seven great-grandchildren; her beloved sister and best friend, Yvonne Dawson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to the love of her life, her husband, Monzel, Loretta was preceded in death by her parents, two children, Jeffrey and Vontress Jackson, and a great-granddaughter, Saraya.
Visitation: 10:00 to 11:00 am on Friday, January 14, 2022 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home. Please wear a mask if you plan to attend the visitation.
Loretta's family encourages you to wear something blue if you attend the visitation or service to honor Loretta's favorite color.
