"You don?t give much thought to the ?neighbor? part of a neighborhood when moving, but this is what creates a community. As soon as I moved in, Mike and Carrie welcomed me to the street. Countless times over the next 15 years I would be summoned over by Mike, meat in the smoker, garage door flung wide-open, tinkering with some project. ?Jay, how ?bout a cold beer?? I don?t think I ever said no. Mike and Carrie would quickly produce several cans of Budweiser and we?d sit, gaze out to the street, and chat. Mike was extremely worldly, and topics of discussion would range from international politics, local tax policy, Austin history, road trips, and amateur radio. Invariably, we would wind up talking maintenance on our cars and motorcycles. We were both do-it-yourselfers and Mike took great pride in how he kept his machines running like a top with his own hands. The one beer usually turned into two, or three, just until about dinner time when Mike would tend to his smoker and I?d hop back home. I enjoyed these sessions so much that sometimes I would stick my head out of the front door just to see if the garage was open next door, hoping to garner the cold-beer invitation like so many times before. Rest in peace, neighbor. This Bud?s for you. -Jay "
