Shirley M. Nugent Henning, 84, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, June 10, 2021, at the Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa.
A private graveside service and burial celebrating Shirley's life will be held on Friday, June 18, 2021, at Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa. A public visitation will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M., Thursday, June 17, 2021, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.
Shirley Marie Gilmore was born on March 31, 1937, in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Ralph and Selma (Miller) Gilmore. In her early years she was educated in Elwood and then graduated from Maquoketa High School in 1955. She married Walter "Wally" Nugent on June 30, 1957 in Maquoketa, Iowa. Two children were born to this union, Brenda and Brent. Walter preceded her in death on February 17, 1969. In September of 1972, she married Ronnie Henning and one child, Brian was born to this union. Ronnie preceded her in death in April of 1978.
Shirley had worked at Clinton Engines in Maquoketa for a short time prior to her marriage to Walter. She then became a housewife and farmed with "Wally" until his death. Upon his passing, she worked for Hermes Auto and Upholstery and JCPenney's until her retirement.
Shirley enjoyed bird watching, fishing, and watching sports, especially basketball and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Those left to honor her memory include her children, Brenda (Vern) Hermes of Maquoketa, IA, Brent (Sheila) Nugent of Maquoketa, IA, and Brian Henning of Maquoketa, IA; 4 grandchildren, Jolene (Mathias) Dague, Michael (Emily) Hermes, Megan (James) Mead, and Deidra (Aaron) Koppes; and 5 great-grandchildren with one on the way. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Walter, and her husband Ronnie.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Shirley M. Nugent Henning memorial fund has been established.
