My beloved mother, Shirley Ann Strang, passed away on December 11, 2020. Mom was 82 and lived the last months of her life with the loving staff at Sodalis Memory Care in Dripping Springs, Texas. Shirley was preceded in death by her son, Dale Edward Williams and former husband Melvin Williams, her father, Newton J. Meyer, her mother Ruth Quinn Meyer, and her husband of over 30 years, Robert E. Strang. Shirley is survived by her daughter, Denice Williams, cousins Daniel Guerra and family, Dennis and Eileen Guerra and family, and Freda Strang and the Strang family of Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Mom was born and raised in Houston, Texas, and attended Pasadena High School. She married Melvin Williams at age 20. Shirley and Melvin lived and raised Denice and Dale in Pasadena near Ruth and Newt Meyer and Doris (Quinn) and Oscar Guerra. Shirley worked at Fluor in Houston and ended her career there after marring Robert 'Bob' Strang. Bob and Shirley enjoyed traveling to Greece, Sweden, and Europe prior to opening a rattan furniture store in Conroe, Texas. They lived on Shirley's beloved Lake Conroe, where she spent many fun times with family and friends. She and Bob moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas in 2009, to be close to Bobs family. Shirley enjoyed traveling and cruising with Freda and Bill Strang, and the many Strang family get togethers.
Bob passed away in 2012, and Shirley returned to Texas to live with her daughter, Denice, and her family, in Austin. Shirley is affectionately called 'Mom Shirley' in Denice's Austin family. Mom Shirley was a one of kind homemaker. She loved any reason to cook, decorate or celebrate, and she had decorations and a meal for every occasion. Her favorite holiday was Christmas and she looked forward to the Guerra Christmas parties and being with family. Mom Shirley was always happy and full of love. She really enjoyed her years in Austin with Denice, Sabrina Brannen, and family, and being a Granny to Aaron and Olivia Brannen.
Mom passed peacefully after struggling a year with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (a fast form of dementia). The year 2020 was extremely difficult due to Covid restrictions and our inability to have personal visits with Mom. However, I am grateful to those who cared for her during her time at Sodalis. Mom received excellent care and was very loved during her stay. Thank you and blessings to all friends, family, and caregivers for all the kindness shown to Mom!
Shirley was much-loved by her family. Due to Covid, the family will be celebrating her life with a memorial celebration near Galveston where she spent many happy times at the beach with her Mom, Dad, and extended family.
