In her words, the service is "to be a celebration of music, family, love and friendships, God's creation and of the Lord, Jesus Christ, whose mission was to teach us how to love all creation, as God the creator does.

Margaret Jean Buettell was born on October 3, 1950 in Mitchell, South Dakota, to Robert Earle and Muriel Irene (Doane) Buettell. At an early age her family moved to Humboldt, Iowa and when she entered third grade they moved to Perry, Iowa where she graduated from Perry High School in 1968. She then attended college at Drake University, Iowa State University, and lastly at the University of Iowa receiving a degree in Anthropology. She married Glenn Arthur Bartelt on September 2, 1972 in Ames, Iowa. To this union one child was born, Jeremy.

While in college, Peggy had worked at the Natural History Museum in Iowa City. Upon her marriage to Glenn, they moved to Maquoketa where she worked primarily as a private music teacher.

Peggy was a very active member of First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa and had served as the youth choir director for many years. She loved music and was an accomplished musician who enjoyed singing, playing the flute, piano, and guitar, and composing songs for church and choir. Throughout the years she had dedicated her time and talents to numerous church music programs as well as performing in area volunteer bands and music organizations most notably "Flutes Unlimited", affiliated with the Quad Cities Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her love of music, her passion for natural history and anthropology was demonstrated in her visiting museums and participating in archeology digs.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Glenn Bartelt of Maquoketa, IA; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy and Kate Bartelt of Sioux City, IA; and 2 grandchildren, Mackenzie and Miles. She was preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church.

"Glenn and family, sending my sincere condolences on the loss of Peggy. She was a very talented special person. She will be missed by many. I enjoyed knowing and working with her at First Lutheran. I never heard her complain and she loved sharing her love for music. She lives on in all those she touched. "

Heather Bopes (Trenkamp) wrote on Feb 28, 2021:

"Peggy gave me one of the best gifts in my life, the love and skill to play piano. I was a former student of hers and had my first (and last) piano recital in 2002. I remember \'quitting\' lessons after a few years due to some family issues but continued to practice and use my skill every day since. I was so excited to see her again in 2017 at Mr. Crawford\'s retirement party to thank her for everything she did for me. I am only one of the many people she touched with her love and gift of music. I hope it brings her family comfort that her light, smile, and energy will have a lasting impression on each and every person she encountered. When I pull out my old piano lesson books for my son, I\'ll have biggest smile on my face each time I see the sticker on the page that she gave me. "

"Dear Glen, Jeremy, and Family,  We are so saddened by this news.  Peggy lived just up the street from us on Otley Avenue in Perry, in the middle of the next block, between 6th and 7th. We talked with  Peg at the Perry High School \"Class of 1968\" 50th Reunion in 2018 . It was so good to see her and catch up.  She seemed so happy and full of life and energy. She sure loved living in Maquoketa. My parents and hers were close, and of course there was always music.  I remember Peggy\'s heart operation when we were all in junior high school.  We all visited her to encourage her after that operation... There was that fragile beauty about Peggy and yet so much energy, too...  Always that twinkle in her eye.  She will be greatly missed. "My heart is hurting for you, Glenn, Jeremy and family. I have so many memories of Peggy. She was one of the most loving, kind, patient, positive, supportive and spiritual person that I had the blessing to know. She gave me my very first Christmas ornament, which I still lovingly place on my tree. She trusted me with babysitting her sweet baby Jeremy and didn't laugh too hard when I put my very first cloth diaper on wrong... very wrong! She patiently put up with my very social personality in youth choir and my mediocre, at best, accompaniment. She had me over to bake cookies, and offered to go shopping with me when I didn't feel that I looked good in anything. She was generous with her hugs and always had a warm and loving smile. She will be greatly missed here on earth, but, God definitely got an angel. Prayers for peace and comfort. "
