MARJORIE POWELL SMITH

Marjorie (Margie) Deane Smith passed away February 12, 2021 at her residence in The Heritage at Gaines Ranch Retirement home in Austin, Texas. She was born March 20, 1920 in West Colombia, Texas to parents Napoleon Osgood Powell and Cordelia Mae (Varner) Powell. She lost her parents at an early age and was raised by her older sisters. After graduating from West Colombia High School, Margie moved to Kingsville, Texas where she met and later married her beloved husband George Smith, Sr. The couple moved to Raymondville, Texas in 1943 where they farmed and ranched and raised their only child, G. A. Smith, Jr. Mr. Smith also taught vocational agriculture in Lyford, Texas. They were happily married for 70 years.

First and foremost, Margie enjoyed being a homemaker and taking care of family. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Raymondville where she taught Sunday School and served as church secretary for a few years in the mid 1950's. In the late 60s Margie and her husband moved to Santa Rosa, Texas where he taught vocational agriculture and she worked as a teacher's aide at Santa Rosa Elementary school. After 10 years the couple returned to Raymondville where they later retired. In 2006 Margie moved to Golden Palms Retirement Home, Harlingen, Texas before moving to Austin in 2009 to be near her son.

Margie was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, and she was instrumental in keeping her family connected. She loved her Lord and Savior and began each day with scripture and prayer. Possessing a positive attitude and good health to the end, Margie often commented that she wanted to live as long as she could be of use to others. At the age of 100 she was knitting baby blankets for preemies at Seton Hospital and looking after close friends at The Heritage. Margie lived her life to the fullest and her hobbies included knitting, book club, crossword puzzles, collecting hummingbirds, and watching the Astros baseball games. A favorite pasttime was
caring for her house plants and her friends would bring their ailing plants to Margie to revive. Her family referred to her as the queen of cookie making and they could expect a fresh batch of homemade cookies on any visit. She was a shining example of how to live a joyful and peaceful life and she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Margie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George Albert Smith, Sr.; five sisters: Martie Pinkley, Naoma Thames, Mae Roper, Ruth Harrell and Helen St. John; one brother, Henry Powell; and niece, Barbara Herring. She is survived by her son G. A. Smith, Jr (Rita) of Horseshoe Bay, Texas; three grandchildren: Trey Smith and Melinda Duffey of Houston, Texas and Laurie Parnell (Dale) of Terrell, Texas; five great-grandchildren: Jessica Duffey, Gaston and Savannah Smith, Brittany Byrom, and Makayla Parnell; nieces Beverly Thrift and Karen Harrell, and several great nieces and nephews.
