Melvin Maynard Haase was born July 24, 1932, on a farm south of Lone Rock to Christian and Martha (Laabs) Haase. He was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lotts Creek on August 21, 1932. When he was two, he moved with his family to a farm north of Fenton. Melvin was confirmed at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Fenton on March 30, 1947. He attended elementary school and two years of parochial school. Melvin attended a little over a year of high school, before quitting to help his dad farm.
On January 26, 1954, Melvin was drafted into the United States Army and served through January 26, 1956.
On October 6, 1955, he was united in marriage to Donna Hansen at the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Armstrong. To this union five children were born. Melvin and Donna lived in the rural Lone Rock and Burt areas before moving into Burt in March of 1961.
Melvin worked for Holding's Garage, Reutzel's Garage, and Larry's K&H as a mechanic and truck driver before having his own business of Melvin's K&H in Burt. He then went to Titonka and worked several jobs before having his own business, Mel's Service, from which he retired in 1999. Melvin enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brother, Gordon. The two also enjoyed attending horse sales together. He belonged to several Saddle Clubs and in later years he was the president of Seneca Saddle Club.
Every year Melvin enjoyed having a large garden, planting a variety of vegetables and making sure the potatoes were planted first. He loved to share the produce with his family, friends, and neighbors. Melvin loved taking the family on their yearly fishing trip to Brainard, MN. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Melvin had many pets in his lifetime but his two favorites in later years were Buddy, Melvin's constant companion and everyone's friend; and Kitty, a stray cat that Melvin took in, cared for, and who made the best pet ever.
