Bernie was a veteran of the 82nd Airborne Division of the US Army, worked full time to support his family while putting himself through college at night. He was awarded a degree in Business Management by RIT and was employed by the Royal Insurance Company for 30 years until his retirement in 1997. Bernie devoted much of his life to serving others. He was an active member of the Gates-Chili Fire Department for 25 years and a lifetime member of the Exempts Organization.
