Marilyn Joan Mating
April 28, 1930 - January 23, 2021

Marilyn Joan Mating of Quincy passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family on January 23, 2021.

She was born on April 28, 1930 in Quincy, the daughter of Cyril and Corinne (Geisler) Schneider of Mt Sterling, Her father moved the family to a farm so his children would experience a life outdoors. After the Korean War, Marilyn married George J. Mating on Dec. 5, 1953 in Mt. Sterling, Illinois. It started a love story that brought four children into the world. He preceded her in death on August 5, 2014.

She graduated from Saint Mary Academy, Mt. Sterling, IL in 1948 and received her nurses training at St. Mary's Hospital in Quincy, graduating in 1951 as a registered nurse. In addition to St. Mary's, she worked at Wesley Memorial Hospital (now Northwestern Memorial Hospital) in Chicago for 2 years. After her children were grown, she worked as a registered nurse at Quincy Medical Group for 20 years.

Marilyn was a member of the Church of St. Peter. She was also a long-time member of Quincy Women's City Club and enjoyed playing Bridge with her friends. Her life-long love of adventures, both big and small, inspired her to visit all 50 states and to teach her children and grandchildren to look for the little surprises you find in unexpected places. Later in life, she started the Putzy club where she and her friends explored little nearby towns. She was a former member of the Gem Unit of Home Extension and was a hospital volunteer with the Blessing Women's Board.

Survivors include her children: Sheryl (Dana) Glasgow of Colorado Springs, CO; Douglas Mating (Jan Beinecke) of Sunrise Beach, MO; Thomas (Suzanne) Mating of Quincy; and Mary Jane Manwaring of Quincy. Nine grandchildren; Ashley (Jason) & Steven Glasgow of Colorado Springs; Alexandra (Michael) Johnson of St. Louis; Lauren Mating & Eric Mating of Quincy & Ryan (Lindsey) Mating of Basom NY; Caitlin Manwaring of Kenosha WI, Natalie Manwaring and Grant Manwaring of Quincy. Five great grandchildren, Makayla & Jaxson Kopp of Colorado Springs; Remington Johnson of St. Louis; Miley Mating of Quincy & Leland Mating of Basom, NY. She is also survived by two brothers, Thomas (Nancy) Schneider of Mt. Sterling, IL, and William (Phyllis) Schneider of Columbia, MO; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Charles Schneider of Mt. Sterling, sister, Margaret Flynn of Chico, CA and a grandson, Scott Thomas Mating.

Services: 10:30 am on Saturday January 30, 2021 in the Church of St. Peter with Monsignor Leo Enlow officiating. Burial in Greenmount Cemetery will follow.

Visitation: 9:00 to 10:30 am on Saturday January 30, 2021 at the Church of St. Peter.
