Steven Allen Harmon was born November 4, 1977, the son of Boyd (Larry) and Sarah Ballantine Damm. He passed away Thursday, June 6, 2013, in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 35.
Steve was born in Merced, California. He moved with his parents from California to Iowa in November 1977 in a cardboard box for a crib. While growing up in Dow City Steve would go fishing with his grandparents and called his catches bish. He was also involved in baseball as a youngster. Steve received his education in the Boyer Valley Community Schools graduating with the class of 1995. After finishing his education Steve joined the National Guard for a short time. He then went to work for a hog confinement near Soldier. Steve moved to Des Moines and worked in the construction business and for a car dealership.
Steve was a jeans and t-shirt kind of guy and a gifted mechanic. He loved racing and followed NASCAR, and other racing programs on televison. His favorite driver was Dale Earnhardt, Sr., and then when he passed away, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. became the driver Steve followed. Steve was a funny and kind-hearted guy who would go out of his way and do anything to help when it was needed. One day he drove from Des Moines to Dow City to build a deck on his grandmas front porch. He enjoyed listening to rock and roll heavy metal music, searching the internet, and participating on Facebook.
Steve was preceded in death by his father, Boyd (Larry) Harmon; his grandparents, Bernard and Lucille Linderman; and David and Lois Ballantine; two cousins; two uncles and one aunt. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Sarah and Richard Damm of Flandreau, South Dakota; three sisters, Jamie Gasper and her husband, Jesse of Flandreau, South Dakota; Melody Bock of Illinois; Jacklyn Wayland Wiebelhaus of Atkinson, Nebraska; his grandmother, Margaret Ballantine of Thomasville, North Carolina; his grandfather, John Ballantine and his wife, Vicky of Arion, Iowa; his girlfriend, Heather Jo Vertz of Des Moines; other relatives and friends.

"Steve, I can honestly say you were the best friend a guy could have , through the good times and the rough times you had my back. I hope that you know, bro that I also had yours whenever you called upon me. I will always remember you helping me get my truck running tip top the first time we met, and then not wanting me to pay you for it. I made you take a measily payment anyway but your friendship and generosity easily exceeded anything I did for you!!! I wish I coulda been there dogg, to try to save you. I am gonna miss your goofy outlook on stuff, and I know that knowone will ever take your place in my heart. Thank you for being you, and excepting me as me. I love you bro!!!! Chad Templeton"

"I will never forget the first time we met big brother! You werent bashful at all. You walked right up to me and hugged me and right away you were calling me your little sister. After that we shared many phone conversations in which you talked me through many problems and for that I am grateful and although I feel I have been cheated out of a relationship with you, I know that god had a plan for you. I am just glad I got to meet you and find out what a wonderful person you are. I will miss you dearly big brother, I love you! Rest In Peace."
