In loving memory of

Dennis Ohl
August 15, 1946 - July 9, 2013

Dennis Maynard Ohl, 66, passed away July 9, 2013. He was born August 15, 1946, in Denison, Iowa, the son of Maynard Ohl and Dorothy Kuhlman (Ohl) Brown.
He attended Denison Elementary and graduated from Dow City High School in 1965. Dennis was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corp. in 1966, serving his country in Vietnam, and was honorably discharged in 1968.
On August 9, 1969, Dennis married his lovely bride, Cynthia Lampe. Together, they raised four beautiful children on an acreage near Dow City, Iowa. Dennis worked with heavy equipment most of his life. He owned his own bulldozing company and finished with Malone Bulldozing. Dennis served on the Dow City Volunteer Fire Department and Dow City Community Club Board for several years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 444.
Dennis cherished his family. Nothing brought him greater joy than building memories with his children and grandchildren. He loved cheering them on at their musical, sporting and academic events. Other treasured moments were shaped through County and State Fairs for pleasure and 4-H, riding horses on several camping excursions, exploring Americana on cross country road trips, banter around the pinochle table and the many extended family reunions.
He was a good guy with a gritty sense of humor, who was always available to lend a helping hand. His vices were candies of all colors, sodie pops, ice cream with the grandkids, Vitamin C, elusive bargains at the sale barn, classic old westerns, and Aces card room.
Dennis was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Dorothy and Gus Kuhlman and paternal grandparents, Emma and Nick Ohl; his stepfather, Donald Brown; and one brother-in-law, Bill Lahr. Survivors include his wife, Cynthia (Cindi) of Dow City, Iowa; four children: Shelly Ellett and her husband, John of West Linn, Oregon; Colette Friest and her husband, Brent of Radcliffe, Iowa; Kara Sloan and her husband, Jeremy of Story City, Iowa; and Nathan Ohl and his significant other, Tara Pauley of Dunlap, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; his mother, Dorothy Brown of Dow City; his father, Maynard Ohl and his wife, Adlyn of Dow City; 14 siblings, Lynnette Ohl of Ricketts, Iowa; Sheryl Berner and her husband, Larry of Dow City; and Sandra (Sandy) Lahr of Emporia, Kansas; Mayard Ohl, Jr. and his wife, Joy of Norfolk, Nebraska; Melanie Laubscher of Dow City; Nick Ohl and his wife, Ali of Dow City; Mark Ohl and his wife, Jodi of Denison; Hollie Nelson and her husband, Rick of Dow City; Julie Wood and her husband, Chris of Dow City; Ronald Brown of Denison; Pam Feser and her husband, Randy of Ogden, Utah; Tammy Brodersen and her husband, Kyle of Denison; Myron Ocander of Valley, Nebraska; and Debbie Martin and her husband, Randy of Blair, Nebraska; and many other relatives and friends.

"Kara, As you now honor your father hold close to your heart Ecclesiastes 3:1 To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven. This is the time for remembering, remembering what your father did for you and said to you and all the times you spent precious time with him. These many memories are a most precious legacy of your father--both his strength and his love. We are praying God will comfort you and that memories will keep your father close.
