In loving memory of

Bob Wiebers
September 17, 1922 - July 11, 2013

Robert John Wiebers was born September 17, 1922, the son of Otto H. and Dora L. Backhaus Wiebers. He died at the Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa, on July 11, 2013, at the age of 90 years. He was baptized on January 14, 1923, in Deloit, Iowa, and was confirmed on April 10, 1938, at Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig, Iowa. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig where he had served on the church board and also on the building committee.
As a child, he attended school in Deloit and Morgan Township country school. As a young adult, he and his brother became known about the neighborhood for their ability of picking corn by hand. One year he achieved the honor of winning the county record and was proud of that achievement. Robert served his country from 1943-1945 in the U.S. Army, a part of the 257th Ordinance Company. They landed on Utah Beach, Normandy, on June 14, 1944. He earned the rank of a D-8, earned five battle stars, a silver battle star and three overseas service bars. His years of service in the European Theatre provided countless stories over the years for his children and grandchildren.
On December 16, 1945, Robert was united in marriage to Dorothy Asmus at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. They settled on a farm in Charter Oak township where he farmed with horses due to the fact that there were no tractors available after the war. They then moved to the Max Hollander farm in Soldier township where they lived for twenty years, during which time they were blessed with the birth of four children, Lynelle, Janeal, Allan and Dale. Later, they purchased the Brandenburg farm in Charter Oak township where they continued to farm and raise their family. During these years there were times when the neighbors would wonder if he was OK as they could hear him singing louder than the tractor and wondered if it was singing or a cry for help. As time passed, they just knew that if he was in the fields, he would either be whistling or singing. Dorothy passed away on October 26, 1999.
Robert was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who enjoyed farming with his sons, wintering in the south, camping, bank trips, and in later years time spent with his special friend Burenett Krohnke.
In addition to his wife, Robert was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter Lynelle Jean in infancy; and two brothers, Ernest and Donald. He is survived by his special friend, Burnie and her family of Denison, Iowa; one daughter, Janeal Holmes of Mapleton, Iowa; her daughters and families, Dorian Aldag-Bird and husband, Bill Bird, and their children, Alexx Aldag and Zachary Bird of Carroll, Iowa; Kris Pomrenke and her husband Jason, and their children, Jenna, Cole, and Jayda of Ankeny, Iowa; Julie Bruning and her husband, Brian, and their children, Ellie and Max of Beemer, Nebraska; son Allan Wiebers and his wife, Karen of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; and their family, Cody Wiebers and fianc, Bridget Meadows of Ute, Iowa, and his son, Briar; Matthew Keating and his wife, Linda of Surprise, Arizona; Mary Pickett and her husband, Darryl of Canton, Ohio; and Michael DeLong and his wife, Trish of Denison, Iowa; son Dale Wiebers and his wife, Lynda of Charter Oak, Iowa; and their family, Arin Hummel and her husband, Joshua and their son, Jonah of Des Moines, Iowa; Kaci Behm and her husband, Dustyn and their son, Kyler of Lincoln, Nebraska; and Neal Wiebers of Des Moines, Iowa. He is also survived by many other relatives and friends.
