He passed away peacefully at St. Anthony Regional Hospital on February 8, 2016, after a short battle with cancer. He was united in marriage to his wife of 45 years, Connie (Jensen) Bradshaw on June 13, 1970, at Zion Lutheran Church, Arcadia, Iowa. They made their home in Westside and moved to Carroll in 1987.
He was raised on their farm west of Dayton, Iowa, and graduated from Dayton High School in 1961. He attended and graduated from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake in 1966. In the fall of 1966 he began his teaching career at Ar-We-Va Community Schools, Westside, Iowa, where he taught junior high and high school social studies for 36 years. Dennis enjoyed officiating high school football. During his 26 years of officiating he and his crew were selected to officiate three state championship games and the Shrine All-Star game. In 2010 he was inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Officials Hall of Fame.
A loyal Hawkeye fan, he enjoyed watching the Hawks on TV and occasionally in person. He especially enjoyed attending the Outback Bowl in 2008 and the Orange Bowl in 2010. He loved to golf and was an avid Packer fan. Dennis and Connie also loved to travel making multiple trips to Las Vegas, Osage Beach, and several cruises. They also traveled to London with the youth basketball team he helped coach.

"Mr. Bradshaw was one of my favorite teachers; he made Social Studies interesting, but perhaps more importantly, he had a special way of sharing life lessons that we needed to hear. He was tough but always fair. I can still see him moving his ears in that funny way...and I smile.. To Connie & family, I pray the Lord holds you in the palm of his hands during this time, and you take comfort knowing you will be together for eternity. God bless ~Lori Grundmeier, AWV Class of '79."
"No other way to put it other than this breaks my heart. First class man who will forever be one of my heroes."
"I heard today of Dennis' passing. We were good "buddies" in Junior and Senior High School in Dayton. We played on the basketball, baseball and track teams together. A good athlete, he always had a good touch on the court and good pitch on the field. We have not been in touch since college days but I am saddened to hear of his passing even though the years have been so many. I live in Montana and winter in Puerto Aventuras, Mexico. Dennis was a good friend. A good man. My care to all the family. Gayle Sandholm."
"Connie, so sorry to hear of Dennis passing. We lost track of you when Delos and Jean moved. Larry and Rita Frank"
"I so loved this man when I went to AR-WE-VA---RIP"
"I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. Mr. Bradshaw was one of my favorite teachers and a wonderful coach. He will be missed."
"Sorry for your loss and deepest sympathy. Mr. Bradshaw was a great teacher and positive influence for many students who passed through the halls of AWV. He made us feel important and that he truly cared about us as individuals. He could be tough on us at times so that we challenge ourselves to be successful. He had a gift to connect with students and draw out the best in each of us. It was a pleasure being one of his students!"
"I think it is safe to say that Mr. Bradshaw was one of the most loved and respected teachers to have ever home roomed at AR-WE-VA. I feel very fortunate to have had him as a coach and a teacher. He truly left a positive impact with everyone he had met. RIP Mr. Bradshaw. Rod Leiting"
"Connie and family, Mr. Bradshaw taught us more life lessons than one can count. I looked forward to talking with him each day during junior high and high school. He truly cared about each and every student and all of us are greater people because of him. One memory that always comes to mind when I hear his name is when he bought a new Cadillac that was very proud of. We named it the "Coup-de-Bradshaw" and thought GM should name a car model in his honor. Maybe they will some day. Rest in peace, sir. David D. Nelson"
"The Ar-We-Va Family has lost a great friend and supporter. Coach Bradshaw was a wonderful teacher, coach and mentor. He pushed me to do my best in whatever I did. I always enjoyed his good nature and his sense of humor. My deepest condolences to Connie and the rest of his family. Rest in peace, Coach. You've earned it. Terry Rickers"
"Connie and family, I am very sorry to hear that Dennis has passed. My condolences to the entire family. Also, I know that Gerry Bruggeman, who left us many years ago, would've wanted me to mention how much Dennis' friendship and coaching ability meant to Gerry during his senior year at Ar-We-Va. Gerry regarded Dennis with deep affection, both on and off the basketball court as well as the football field. Jim Stoffers"
"Connie and family, So sorry to hear of the passing of Dennis. Haven't talked much since we moved, but there were always stories to tell of Westside. I remember the taco parties and other fun times the faculty had. Prayers are with all of you. Pam/Rick McCampbell"
"There are so many great memories and stories we shared in the 21 years we worked together at Ar-We-Va. You could always count on the best from Brady. We greatly enjoyed working high school and college football games together (I think he finally forgave me for making him work the second half of a football game with a broken leg.) He told me at half time he got hit but I told him "NO SECOND HALF--NO PAYCHECK"). We laughed about that for years. He made a difference in so many students at AWV that he will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, good friend. Dave Wyckoff"
"Connie and Bradshaw Family, I was deeply saddened to hear the news about Coach Bradshaw's passing last evening at our basketball event at SE Valley school (probably appropriate that I heard the news from Gary Paulsen at an athletic event!!!). Coach was a tremendous person and an inspiration to many of his students and student-athletes. He made quite an impression on young adults; a positive and impactful one. He is a big reason I became a teacher/coach, and today a school leader. Brady loved teaching, loved coaching; but more importantly he genuinely cared about all his students and their personal lives. He wanted us to be ourselves and be successful. He succeeded in that goal throughout his 35+ plus years of teaching and coaching. Brady was unique as he made great connections through his stories, his wealth of experiences and how he shared his perspective(s); always with that "laugh and/or look". I'm so happy I called him a month ago and had a chance to reminisce about the Ar-We-Va days, how he was doing (of course he wanted to know how I was doing first!), and what lies ahead for our young people, our nation, etc.!?!? We had a good 30 minute chat that made me disappointed in myself that I hadn't contacted him much more often!!! Coach; you will be missed greatly!! God Bless Rich Stoffers, Ar-We-Va Class of 1974"
"He was a real stand up guy and always had your back. History was certainly not my favorite subject yet he was able to make it interesting. I wish there were more teachers (and coaches) like him because he genuinely cared. You will be missed."
"Connie, you have my deepest sympathy in your loss. May God wrap his loving arms around you as you grieve. Thoughts and prayers. Sue Mein"
"Dedicated educator and a real team player. Cared about the school and the kids. One of my favorites to have worked with in my career. Leonard Griffith"
"The best kind of educator and person! A genuine, encouraging teacher and coach who praised you when you did well and pushed you when he knew you could do better. Years after graduating from AWV, he was just as interested in me as an adult as he was as his student. He was still encouraging and still had that twinkle in his eye. Your impact continues though you are now gone. Rest in peace. You will be missed..."
"Tom will miss his daily sports chat with Braddy this summer. Was great neighbor !! Kay"

"I wanted to share that Dennis was a great person. He always tried to convince me that I could do better in school. He took interest in people and truly cared. He also kicked me out of the only football game I had ever been kicked out of, it was a JV game and he was the referee. I deserved it btw. He had integrity and was very consistent with everyone. Brett McAlpine - proud former "Mean Green" player and student impacted by Dennis as a coach and teacher. My condolences to his family and friends"
"A tearful goodbye to a special human being, friend, teacher, husband, son-in-law and so much beyond. My memories of Denny were as Pete & Neva's friend, my Social Studies teacher, Connie's husband and Wally and Leta's son-in-law. And he was exceptional in each of those roles. In fond rememberance. Cindy Petersen Bateman"
"Weve lost another great one. Our paths crossed many years ago on the athletic fields and courts. I wasnt a student or athlete of his unfortunately, I was an athlete from a rival school, Charter Oak-Ute. Coach Bradshaw was a great man, teacher and coach. He impacted the lives of many and Im sad that hes gone, but what a legacy he left! My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. Rest in peace Coach!"
