Frieda M Sonnichsen

Frieda Nellie Sonnichsen was born on a farm north of Buck Grove, Crawford County, Iowa, on October 27, 1922. She was the daughter of Carl and Lena Timmerman Beermann. Frieda died Sunday, June 19, 2016, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of ninety-three.
Frieda was baptized December 10, 1922 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Buck Grove by Pastor William Frehse. She was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Her confirmation verse was Matthew 28:20. She attended the public school District No. 10 in Buck Grove for 8 years and then finished her schooling in Denison.
Frieda taught Sunday School in Buck Grove for a number of years before moving to Denison. She was a member of Ladies Aid and the Fellowship Club in Buck Grove. She helped on the family farm and did other jobs in town.
On February 8, 1942, Frieda was united in marriage to William (Bill) Sonnichsen by Pastor Marvin Lilie at St. John’s in Buck Grove. They farmed southwest of Buck Grove till the spring of 1945 when they moved to Denison. To this union two children were born. Daughter Elaine Ann passed away September 22, 2002 in Fort Myers, Florida and a son LeRoy was born April 11, 1949. After moving to Denison Frieda worked at different motels for 16 years and then managed Mode O’Day Dress Shop for a number of years. She worked at Eventide Nursing Home in Denison for 6 years and then retired.
Frieda was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and joined the Dorcas Society and did lots of volunteer work. She loved to quilt and do crafts and attend craft shows. She also loved camping with the Good Sam Club, playing cards, watching certain television shows and taking long trips with their camper. They traveled all the United States but Oregon and Vermont. Also did parts of Hawaii and some of Canada. Growing flowers and vegetable gardening was a must for her. She loved when the grandchildren spent time with her in the summer.
Frieda was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her daughter, Elaine; her parents and parents-in-law; one sister, Leona and her husband, Thorwald Johannsen; and two brothers, Vernon and Carl Beermann Jr. Survived by her son, Lee (Sonni) (wife Denise) Sonnichsen of Denison; grandchildren: Brandy (husband Bryce) Nielson of Lincoln, Nebraska; Michelle (husband Tom) Strezishar of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; Michael (wife Laura) Sutterer of The Woodlands, Texas; great-grandchildren: Hayden and Nolan Nielson; Jacob, Emily and Kathryn Strezishar; Kylie and Corinna Sutterer; many other relatives and friends.
