In loving memory of

Robert Strickland Jones
June 8, 1949 - December 16, 2020

Robert Strickland Jones, born in Rome, Georgia on June 8, 1949, died peacefully at his home in Cumming, Georgia on December 16, 2020 at age 71. The son of Hilda Strickland Jones and James Paul Jones of Rome, Robert graduated from Darlington School and then in 1970 from Emory College of Emory University where he distinguished himself as president of Chi Phi fraternity, participated in intramural sports, and excelled as a key member of Emory's nationally recognized Barkley Forum Debate team. He was a member of the College's Honor Council and was inducted into Emory's Senior Society in honor of his leadership and achievements. From college, Robert entered and completed Emory Law School, earning his J.D. degree among the top students in his class, serving on the Emory Law Journal and recognized as a Moot Court champion. A sought after litigator, he followed his career in law with corporate and real estate experiences.

A devoted father to four sons, Robert was known by his friends as an avid sports fan, especially in the case of the University of Georgia football, amazingly remembering the details of every important game in every season along with descriptions of the players and the coaches and their achievements. He was known to question calls by referees that set the Bulldogs back, explaining to the Refs calmly that they were simply wrong, if not blind. Well, not calmly. UGA beating Georgia Tech made the following 364 days a joy for Robert. In his young adult years he enjoyed playing tennis, softball and touch football and was a better than average golfer, having won several tournaments at Atlanta's Capital City Club, and he enjoyed teaching youngsters the sport.

Robert enjoyed discussing politics and had a keen insight to American history as well as world history. He had strongly held theories about the John F. Kennedy assassination and would share them often with anyone who would listen. He loved movies, especially the James Bond and Star Wars series, but was equally interested in documentaries on historical figures.

Robert was known by his friends to have a warm and generous heart for others, a lighthearted sense of humor, a near photographic memory and an appreciation for lively debate on any subject. People enjoyed his company.

Robert is survived by his son Robert Strickland Jones, Jr. and Strickland's wife Shelley Henry Jones and their three children, Robert Strickland Jones, III, James Henry Jones, and Rosemary Evelyn Jones; his son Justus Huffaker Jones and Strickland and Justus' mother Kristen Beck Jones; his son Henry Alexander Jones and his wife Chantal Guerrero Jones; and his son Stephen Lang Jones and Henry and Stephen's mother Sue Lang Jones; also his brother James Pinckney Jones, III and his wife Latrell Johnson Jones and Robert's nephew James Pickney Jones, IV and his niece Kathryn Jones Lee; and great-nephews and nieces William Harrison Jones, Andrew Strickland Jones, Emily Elizabeth Gallman and Walker Jones Gallman.
