He made an awesome 99-yard interception return during the final game of the season at Virginia Tech to help the Mountaineers earn a 22-21 victory in Blacksburg, VA. This play was mentioned in Coach Bowden's book, Called to Coach, which he credited as saving his job. He was voted the team's best tackler heading into his senior season. Marcus was drafted to the New York Giants in 1975. Due to a knee injury, he was placed on the Injured Reserve list before he turned in his football cleats. He would later be recognized for his high school athletic accomplishments by being inducted into the Cleveland County Hall of Fame on May 9, 2018.

"I am sorry for your loss. I always liked talking with Marcus when he came by Graham School. We would end up having long conversations about many different things. I could always count on Marcus to step up and lead the opening prayer for our PTO meetings. Some nights I wondered if he was going to do an alter call. I will miss his hearty laugh and optimistic spirit. I pray for God's comfort for your family."

"Oh WOW! I grew up with Marcus, the Mauney Family, in our Church and community! Beyond playing ball, Marcus was an awesome guy!!! It started with football, even before Shelby High. He turned it out at every level he played! But yes, as a Golden Lion ? , Marcus was something to behold!!! On to college, he was one of the first guys I knew to play on the college level and he continued to shine! As he shined, Marcus always reached back for younger people, encouraging us to save our souls and live a life of Purpose, to live for God! I?m a few years younger than Marcus, but every time I saw him, he greeted me with the same Spirit, the same welcoming Love we grew up with!!! He always reminded us he was just as tough today as he always was !!! And the forearm he laid across your chest left little doubt!!! Lol RIP my Brother!!! Prayers for your Family!"

"I know high school was a long time ago, but that\'s how I know Marcus. We were in the same class together and shared the same last name. In class lineups we were always side by side. We also had several classes together. I remember studying with him before tests in senior English. Because of his amazing football stats and team chemistry the class of 71 got to know what it felt like to be champions. I was so happy to learn in his adult life he became a pastor. Rest in peace, Marcus. Tell Jesus I said Hello. "

"Marcus was a student in my chemistry class years ago at Shelby High School. I remember him as being an extremely hard working student who was always concerned that he did his best. Would see him periodically around town in recent years and he always had a smile on his face and expressed how much he cared for the Golden Lions. Thoughts and payers go out to his family as they deal with the loss of a special person.. Dick Hamrick "
