Duane A. Spain, 79, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday morning, November 6, 2020, at his home.

A private family visitation and funeral celebrating his life will be held at Cornerstone Baptist Church in DeWitt, Iowa. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Maquoketa, Iowa.

Duane Ambrose Spain was born on September 19, 1941 in rural Petersville, Iowa to Ambrose and Geraldine (McDonnell) Spain. He was a 1959 graduate of Delmar High School. He married Frances Jeanne O'Brien on June 15, 1963 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa. Together, they had three children: Todd, Tammi, and Chad.

Duane owned and operated several businesses including Spain Painting in Maquoketa for 45 years, Zephyr Gas Station in Maquoketa from 1980 to 2015, and the Dairy Treat in Welton for 11 years.

Duane was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa. He was a wonderful dad and grandpa, and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his family.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Fran Spain of Maquoketa, IA; children, Todd (Joan) Spain of Elwood, IA, Tammi (Dave) Paulsen of Lisbon, IA, and Chad (Chris) Spain of Maquoketa, IA; 10 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; brothers, Dean (Pam) Spain of Maquoketa, IA, Alan Spain of Clinton, IA, and Dennis (Renee) Spain of DeWitt, IA; and sisters, Donna Determan of DeWitt, IA, Patricia (Gene) Held of E. Moline, IL, and Diane (Mel) Seng of Davenport, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made in Duane's honor to Hospice of Jackson County.
