Daniel Leo, son of Paul and Rita (Howe) Brutsche, was born November 18, 1941, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. He grew up on the family farm in Guthrie County. Dan graduated from Kuemper High School in Carroll in 1959 and continued his education at Iowa State University in Ames. He earned his Agriculture Business degree in 1963. Following graduation, he worked as a loan officer for the Federal Land Bank in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa. During this time he joined the National Guard. In 1966 he started farming in partnership with his father.
On June 17, 1967, Dan was united in marriage with Nancy Pevestorf at Annunciation Church in Coon Rapids. Five children were born to this union. The family lived on the family farm in Guthrie County. In 1986, Dan started as a Farm Financial Planner through Iowa State Extension Service.
Dan was a member of Annunciation Parish in Coon Rapids. He was a past member of Guthrie County Cattlemens Association, Farm Bureau and I.S.U. County Extension Council. He was active in Guthrie County Democrats, Guthrie Center American Legion; Iowa Corn Growers Association, serving on the Usage and Production Committee, and previously as a director on the Iowa Corn Promotion Board. Dan enjoyed working on agriculture policy issues, telling people about his Irish heritage, listening to jazz, farming and, above all, spending time with his family.
Dan was diagnosed with cancer in 2007. He was in St. Anthony Hospital, Carroll, a number of times in 2008 before his death there on Monday, April 21, 2008. He was 66 years, 5 months and 3 days of age.
Preceding Dan in death are his parents and grandparents.
He is survived by his wife Nancy Brutsche of Coon Rapids; five children: Mary (Kevin) Andersen of Fairfield; Michael Brutsche of Reno, NV; Catherine (Greg) Bergman of Peabody, KS; Joseph (Andria) Brutsche of Woodbury, MN; and Patrick Brutsche of Reno, NV; three grandsons Wyatt and Dakota Andersen and Joshua Bergman; mother-in-law Arlene Pevestorf of Coon Rapids; brother-in-law Doug (Donna) Pevestorf of Coon Rapids; sister-in-law Carol (Lance) Meyer of Blairsburg; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. "In today's world it can be hard to find a true individual. Dan was a true individual. He used the talents God gave him to follow a path in life that was always true to his beliefs, and he always did the best he could in a world that is not always kind to the common mind. I'll miss his phone calls and good natured jabs at our established 'leaders'. Heaven has gained a good soul. ro"
