Vincent John Koenig, son of Joseph and Frances (Roth) Koenig was born December 27, 1914 in Halbur, Iowa. He attended St. Augustine Grade School and Carroll High School, where he excelled as an athlete. He graduated in 1934 and began working for Pepsi-Cola Bottling in Carroll. On November 15, 1938, Vincent was united in marriage with Dorothy Ann Schenkelberg in Halbur.
In 1943, he was drafted into the U.S. Navy where he served during World War II. From the late 1950's to 1971, Vincent owned and operated Main Ice Cream in Carroll. He later worked as a representative for Blue Cross/Blue Shield until his retirement in 1982.
Vincent had a lifelong passion for baseball. With his six brothers, Vince played baseball for the Halbur Merchants and continued to play semi-professional baseball for about 15 years. He then coached American Legion baseball for several years. He was also well-known for his avid interest in coin collecting and in helping others evaluate their collections. Other interests include playing pinochle, fishing and volunteering at Church and at the Carroll Community of Concern. However, his greatest love was spending time with family and friends.
In 2008, Vincent moved to Omaha to be closer to family. On February16, 2009 he died at University of Nebraska Medical Center at the age of 94 years, 1 month, and 20 days.
Vincent was preceded in death by his wife of over 70 years, Dorothy Koenig in January 2009; his parents; brothers: Leo, Eugene, Simon and Father Jerome Koenig; two infant brothers; and sisters Nora Heinrichs and Florine Koenig.
He is survived by his daughters Karen and husband Richard Siegler of Davis, CA; Vicki Koenig and husband Ken Monk of Oakland, CA and Jaynee and husband Joe Cavanaugh of Omaha, NE; 7 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; brothers Herb Koenig of Omaha, NE and Joe Koenig and wife Lucille of Cedar Rapids; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Memorials can be made to Holy Spirit Church or New Hope Village in Carroll
