American Legion Maurice Dunn Post #7

     John Henry Oswald was born to Henry and Laura (Grote) Oswald on March 31, 1931, at Carroll, Iowa. He was one of ten children. He lived on a farm near Willey, Iowa throughout his early childhood.  In his teenage years he worked on the Danner farm near Willey.  He attended school at Willey and Mt. Carmel.  He joined the armed services in 1952 and served during the Korean War until 1954.  After leaving the army, he worked for Wittrock Motors as an auto mechanic from 1954-1966.  In 1967 he worked the night shift loading bread trucks for Old Home Bread. He joined the Carroll Police Force in 1968-1987 serving most of those years as a night officer. In the fall of 1987 he began work as a night security guard with Per Mar Security working at Pella Corporation.  Over the years he also worked as an auto mechanic at Phillips 66 and Ralphs DX.
    
In 1955 he met Phyllis Sapp while attending an Arcadia dance.  They were married at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Carroll on May 4, 1957. This union was blessed with five children. The couple lived in Carroll all of their married life.  He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church and later Holy Spirit Church where he was an usher for many years.  He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, and the Holy Spirit Mens Club.
    
John loved singing, playing cards, telling jokes, completing crossword puzzles, and attending his childrens and grandchildrens sporting events, concerts and dance recitals.  He was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed following his beloved Cardinals team.
    
John died on Friday, February 20, 2009 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa following a long illness.
    
He is survived by his wife Phyllis Oswald of Carroll; four daughters: Jane and husband Ed Griesel of Sioux City; Joleen Schulz of Carroll; Judy and husband Tracy Kendzora of Des Moines; and Julie and husband Rich Anderson of North Branch, MN; son John Oswald Jr. and wife Tammy of Omaha, NE; 16 grandchildren: Eddie and wife Megan; Joey and fianc Liz; Gabe, Luke and Matthew Griesel; Ashlee and fianc Joe; Amber and Autumn Schulz; Cassie, Mandie and Ryan Kendzora; Alex and Austin Oswald; and Garrett, Zack and Rachel Anderson; one great-granddaughter Emma Daniels; three sisters: Agnes Louis of Carroll; Leona Seidl of Carroll; and Marie and husband Max Bell of Des Moines; brothers Andrew Oswald and wife Iris of Omaha, NE, and Richard Oswald and wife Emily of Coon Rapids; sister-in-law Marlene Oswald of Adams, MN; other relatives and many friends.
    
John was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Laura Oswald; sisters Genevieve Nees and Angela Nees; brothers Eugene (in infancy) and Walter Oswald; grandson Johnnie Griesel (in infancy); mother-in-law Margaret Sapp; and brothers-in-law Leon Nees, Frank Nees, Bob Louis and John Seidl.
