Emma Geneve, daughter of John and Laena (Schaa) Pabst, was born August 23, 1905, at Grundy Center, Iowa. She grew up with her eight siblings on the family farm and attended country schools in the area. Emma graduated from Grundy Center High School inn 1924 and completed Normal Training in Cedar Falls. She taught at several country schools in Grundy County.
On a blind date arranged by her sister, Emma met and became fast friends with Donald B. Stubbs. They were united in marriage on August 7, 1930, at Kamrar, Iowa. Two children were born to this union. The couple moved to Nebo, Illinois for their first teaching post. Emma remembered that they saw Lindbergh land near St. Louis during this time. They moved back to Alta Vista, Iowa, and when they started their family Emma was a full-time mother and homemaker. For Dons jobs, the family moved to Des Moines and Cedar Rapids for a time, then other Iowa communities. They retired in Bayard in 1971. When Don died unexpectedly in 1985, Emma remained living in her home.
Emma was a member of United Methodist Church in Bayard and volunteered at Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids. Along with her husband, Emma was a great sports fan and supported high school sports wherever they lived. She also followed college sports, especially the Iowa State Cyclones. Emma enjoyed flower gardening, sewing, handiwork and even tried her hand at ceramics. She was a talented baker and was famous for her brownies and cakes.
Emma moved into the Guthrie Center Nursing Home in 2000 due to failing health. She died at the Guthrie County Hospital on Sunday, January 14, 2007, at the age of 101 years, 4 months, 3 weeks and 1 day.
Preceding Emma in death are her parents, husband and eight brothers and sisters.
Emma is survived by her son Donald J. Stubbs and wife Barb of Garner; daughter Mary Kay and husband Del Bowden of Omaha, NE; six grandchildren: Kevin Stubbs and wife Melinda of Skiatook, OK; Kirk Stubbs and wife Tina of Cedar Rapids; Diana and husband Bart Hansen of Hampton; Brenda and husband Steve Howke of Whitefish, MT; Kim and husband John Roepke of Omaha, NE; Scott Bowden and wife JoAnne of Omaha, NE; 14 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
