Esther Lena, daughter of Matthew "Frank" and Loretta (Steffes) Broich was born on February 5, 1942 in Carroll, Iowa. She grew up on a farm near Carroll until she was five. Her family then moved to Maple River, where Esther attended St. Francis of Assisi School. Esther then worked for Jung's Bakery and Moore Brothers Grocery Store in Carroll. On July 7, 1962, Esther was united in marriage with Loren A. Leiting at St. John Church in Arcadia. The family made their home on a farm just west of Arcadia where Esther worked as a homemaker and cared for the couple's four children. She was a master of stained glass and active member of the Christian Mothers, St. John Ladies Guild and served as a Den Mom in the Cub Scouts. In her spare time, Esther enjoyed shopping, decorating, bowling and spending time with her grandchildren. After the death of her husband Loren in 1997, Esther remained on the farm until she became a resident of St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll in August of 2009. On January 16, 2010 she was transferred to St. Anthony Hospital, where she died on January 17th at the age of 67 years 11 months and 12 days. Esther was preceded in death by her parents, husband, grandson Clayton John Leiting at infancy; sister Marian Broich at infancy and brother-in-law George Hoffman. She is survived by her children Robert Leiting of Sac City; Judy and husband Kevin Elliott of Spencer; John Leiting and wife Theresa of Ankeny and Brian Leiting of Carroll; grandchildren: Heather Kelley, Marie Ulrich, Amy and husband Justin Simons, Holly Leiting, Stacie Leiting, Stephanie Elliott, Sean Elliott, Kairee Elliott, Britnie Leiting, Amanda Leiting, Elli Leiting, Tyler Leiting, Colin Leiting and Lindsey Leiting; 4 great- grandchildren; siblings: Jane and husband Paul Wessling of Anita; Bonnie and husband Vernal Onken of Lidderdale; Dorothy Hoffman of Lynchburg, VA; Rita and husband Marvin Bruch of Manning; Richard Broich of Des Moines; Phyllis and husband George Wessling of Garner; Chris and husband Terry Assman of Omaha and Dennis Broich of Westside; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
