Houston Genevieve Elnora, daughter of Frank and Mary (Steffes) Rupiper, was born September 29, 1916 near Roselle, IA. She attended Holy Angels School in Roselle and St. Angela's Academy in Carroll. On September 29, 1936, Genevieve was united in marriage with Louis J. Pietig in Roselle. They were members of Sts. Peter and Paul/Holy Spirit Parish for over 40 years and were the parents of five children. Genevieve was an active member and president of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Legion of Mary. She organized Inter-faith study groups, served as a member of the Kuemper Parents Club along with her husband Louis, president of the Rosary and Altar Society and president of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women. She was a Girl Scout Leader (Troop 22) and volunteered for the Red Cross, St. Anthony's Hospital and local voting booths. In 1963 the Pietig family hosted Olga Marta Herra of Costa Rice who attended Kuemper as an exchange student. In 1967 Genevieve received a Catholic Youth Organization Award from Bishop Joseph M. Mueller of Sioux City for her participation in parish activities and contributions for diocesan education of youths. Genevieve enjoyed baking, cooking and fishing, especially with family and friends on weekends at Spirit Lake. She and Louis retired to Singer Island, FL in the 1970s but always maintained Carroll connections particularly through their home and her bridge club. While in Florida, they were members of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Riviera Beach for thirty years. She continued her DCCW work and was also a lector and Eucharistic minister. In 1986 Genevieve and Louis received a papal honor on their 50th wedding anniversary at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. This honor pro ecclesia et pontifice' recognized their exemplary life and generous benefactions to many church causes throughout Iowa. The Most Reverend Frank H. Greteman, former bishop of the Sioux City Diocese, conferred this honor for Pope John Paul II. After the death of her husband on January 1, 1987 Genevieve continued to live in Florida until her health began to fail when she moved to Doak Walker Care Center in Steamboat Springs, CO, to be nearer her children during her last years. She died there on Friday, May 7, 2010, at the age of 93 years, 7 months and 8 days. Preceding her in death are her parents; husband; infant daughter Mary Louise Pietig on June 6, 1947; son James L.
