"daughter of Joyce Witt Quick. I am sorry to hear about Aunt Selma's passing. Please accept my sympathy."
Selma Mary, daughter of William and Mary Caroline (Holtz) Witt, was born January 5, 1910 in Lincoln Township, Audubon County, Iowa. Selma was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church near Audubon. She attended Gray school and then graduated from Gray High School in 1928. Selma completed her nursing education at St. Anthony School of Nursing in Carroll in 1931. On September 24, 1933, Selma was united in marriage with Linn Carl Ullerich at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lincoln Township, Audubon County, Iowa. She was an active member there in Ladies Aid, LWML and a part-time organist. They made their home on a farm south of Manning and were the parents of four children: Romanza, Philip, Dean and Marie. Selma was primarily a homemaker, raising their children and helping on the farm. She was a member of Women's Farm Bureau. Selma tended a large garden and canned fruits and vegetables. She took pride in baking pies and bread and entered them in the Audubon County Fair and Iowa State Fair. She also sewed and knitted for the family. When the younger children were in high school in the 1960's Selma started working at Manning General Hospital as a registered nurse. In the early 1970's her husband retired from farming and they moved into Manning in 1974. After her husband suffered a stroke in 1980 Selma was able to care for him at home as she had retired by this time. After her husband's death in 1982 Selma continued to live in their home until 2006 when she became a resident of Allen House, an assisted living facility, in Atlantic. When she was no longer able to live alone she moved to Atlantic Nursing and Rehab in April of 2008.
