"Mr. Wetzel, You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. What an amazing life your father had! I'm sure he is enjoying his Heavenly home now! Beth Rosario and family"
Albert LeRoy, Andrew and Inga (Johnson) Wetzel, was born February 1, 1922, at home in Greeley Township, Shelby County, Iowa. The farm was located between Manilla and Irwin. Albert attended rural school near his home and helped on the family farm. The family moved south of Bayard in 1941. The same year he enlisted into the United States Navy. Albert received his honorable discharge in 1946 and returned to the home farm. On September 22, 1946 Albert was united in marriage with Jeanette Miller at her parent's home south of Bayard. They were the parents of four children and farmed the family farm until Albert retired from full time farming in 1987. However, he and Jeanette continued to live on the farm and he continued to work part time the remainder of his life. Albert was very supportive and involved in the Bayard community. He was a member of the United Methodist Church where he was a member of the men's group and served as a Trustee. As a lifetime member of the American Legion, he served as an officer many times. Albert was elected president of the Bayard School Board and served on the elevator board and REC board. In his spare time he played with the Guthrie County Cribbage group and enjoyed fishing and playing cards. Albert could always be found tinkering on his farm and later in life doing wood working projects, especially for his family. In June of 2014 Albert was diagnosed with cancer. Even as his health continued to decline he enjoyed playing games with his devoted family. He died at home on Friday, September 19, 2014 at the age of 92 years, 7 months and 18 days. Preceding him in death are his parents; two children Linda Nielsen and David Wetzel; siblings Ruby Jensen, Thelma Erb, Harold Wetzel, Lyle Wetzel, Kenneth Wetzel, Ivan Wetzel, and Lorraine Wetzel at birth. Albert is survived by his wife Jeanette Wetzel of Bayard; two children Jim (Linda) Wetzel of Olathe, KS and Steve (Bibiana) Wetzel of Doral, FL; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; son in law Maurice (marylin) Nielsen of Mukwonago, WI; daughter in law Bonnie Wetzel of Cedar Falls; sister Ilo Miller of Nevada, IA; two sisters in law Vernie Wetzel of Overland Park, KS and Marlys Wetzel of Badger; brother in law Phillip (Lois) Miller of Waterloo; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
